"Zone Alarm Pro 4.5.530.000 and MS Flight Simulator 2002"
Fri Nov-28-03 03:39 AM by Allyn

I've just developed a problem downloading weather into MS FS 2002. After much troubleshooting and testing, I've determined it's caused by the new update of ZAPro.

The main symptom is an application freeze, a rare problem with Windows XP Professional. Task manager will not shut down FS2002 or ZAPro and is unable to send an error report. Recovery can be accomplished via Restart or Shutdown from the Windows Start button.

I've purged my Internet Logs and started with a virgin True Vector Service. Encountered the same symptoms again.

No other application appears to be impacted, including MS FS 2004. Only MS FS 2002 is affected and runs fine providing ZAPro is shut down before gameplay.

Is anyone else experiencing problems with the weather download, regardless of ZoneAlarm version?

You know, I'm starting to wonder myself about whether this latest release of ZA (pro or free) isn't responsible for a host of inexplicable (yet undocumentable?) software and hardware problems.

I have experienced increasing problems and performance issuses with my systems since Zonelarm releases beginning about 2-3 versions ago. I am exploring alternatives such as Sygate, eTrust, Kerio.

Why not stay with the older version? That's what I did.

Here is a link to the old free version (3.7.211) at Zonelabs:

Are there any features of ZA which will be less effective if you stay with an older version? (bad host list, security updates etc.)

So Marti, what do you suggest as far as trying to pinpoint the conflicts and reporting them to ZoneLabs? Check their forums?

Oh.

Regarding Allyn's problem, he needs to set some specific permissions for the game.

Marti, I'm looking into this. I gather that the latest version's new features provide Expert Rules just for that. What I don't quite understand is why the program worked fine with the previous version of ZAPro but not with 4.5.530. I would think that it simply wouldn't connect or would give me a message instead of freezing Flight Simulator and essentially crashing Windows XP Professional.

ZAPro 4.5 has newer features; one of them is causing a problem. I wish I had an answer, but I use ZAPlus and have never installed any games.

I've found several threads regarding game issues with the latest releases (all are affected). Following is a link to one such thread.

http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=CommonPrograms&message.id=1841

Essentially, users encountering problems should play games in a window, if able, or roll back to the earlier version. Zone Labs is working on a fix and should have a new release in a few weeks.

Thank you, Marti, for your help.

You are welcome. I've sent the link to the other thread that you posted in DSLR to Corey (at Zone Labs). That way we can get some direct input on the problem and what ZL is going to do about the problem.
