Does anyone know how to prevent the description boxes from popping up in the quicklaunch bar and in the system tray per the screenshot example below? TIA.

Dunno, I always find them useful in case of brain fart.

Maybe some kind of TweakUI or similar utility? I can see that under certain circumstances that might be a useful thing... like a multi-user environment (frat house, public access, family etc.). Good luck and post your successful findings.

The registry editing method provided in links 1 & 3 do not
work for me. Seems it's for XP and not W2K.

I tried the method in link #2, but i guess i'm doing something
wrong cuz that's not working out for me either. Is it saying
that i need to create a registry file 'balloontips.reg' and
then copy and paste the following into it?

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"EnableBalloonTips"="NO"

I ran regedit afterwards as instructed and it's still has no
effect.

Did you save it as a .reg file and then merge it into your registry?

Once saved you should double click the .reg file and merge it into the registry - then it will show up under regedit.

Yeah i saved it with a .reg extension and saved it to my D: OS partition. Then under the run command i typed in: "regedit /s D:\balloontips.reg" and it didn't have any effect.

Tweak UI has a "turn off" for baloon tips and I'm sure that X-teq does, too.

Both appear to for XP - I don't know about Win 2000. Neither has it for Win 98.

On a slightly different tack, if there is no way to stop it, can the time 'til the balloon appears be set to a longer period? I have at least a one second delay before they pop up. Usually, I move and click the mouse so quickly that it never occurs - a longer period would possibly be satisfactory for anyone less speedy.
