"Zonealarm"

While working on brotherinlaw's computer I tried to get on his DSL and couldn't.

It turns out that he has been disabling Zonealarm to get on line and didn't tell me...go figure....

Anyway, I didn't have to do anything that I can recall to get zonealarm configgured for my dial up but apparently there's a permission in there somewhere for DSL....????

JB, I don't know what I'm talking about.

I had hoped there would be a menu choice somewhere in Zonealarm that will not block DSL connection.

Nevertheless, I'm going to dig around in my version of Zonealarm to see what can be done and I appreciate any info you might have.....

The box I was talking about is (see attachment)is how mine looks ,though some people prefer to renew their ip manually but I found that annoying and have not had a problem doing it this way. This is on shaw cable here in Vancouver but I would assume dsl works the same way with dhcp.

I don't know of any permission for DSL either. They do ask you how you hook up to the net when installing, but other than that...no.

John,

Does he have the latest version of ZA? (http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/znalm/zaReleaseHistory.html)

What happens when you try to connect to the internet?

What ISP?

jbmcmillan (post #1) suggested putting the DNS in the trusted zone. (primary DNS and secondard DNS)

Marti, he's using Earthlink DSL. When he tries to get on, a "cannot display" message appears.

That's when he told me Zonealarm has to be disabled. For some reason Zonealarm sees his DSL as enemy territory......

He just downloaded the latest because I keep nagging at him about it....

I am almost certain that the answer can be found in responses 1 and 6. When this sort of thing happens, that is normally the solution.

Can you tell us what operating system, and other system details: Computer, CPU, Memory, etc.-- as well as what other security software you may have running. Also, and most importantly: is he using the WinPoET dialer, or RASPPOE, or something similar? Windows XP has its own PPPoE dialer. If so, then ZoneAlarm interfaces with such a PPPoE connection through the dialup adapter. Check to see whether ZA is detecting his network adapter correctly: if conventional DSL, it is interfaced to an ethernet NIC; if PPPoE DSL as mentioned above, it is interfaced to a dialup adapter. We need to know as much specifics as you can give, thanks. Warmly, Ran

Okey, Randy XPSP1 plus all security updates from two days ago .

Ethernet NIC

Adaware. spy-bot, cookie jar, AVG...all updates to yesterday

I downloaded yet another new Zonealarm, went through the set up for him, checked both boxes outgoing DNS/DHCP.

Tried lowering the security settings

nothing worked except disabling ZA with a right click on the icon.

I also made sure the box was checked for LAN and not dialup.

Should be a place under firewall >> zones tab.

Was ZA totally removed before the new version was added? (she says, grasping at straws...)

Add your DNS Servers to the Trusted Zone using the Add button in Firewall pane {see pic}. Since you have WinXP, you can determine your DNS addresses (IPs) by opening the Cmd window {Start, Run, Cmd} and typing "ipconfig" followed by "Enter".

John,

I don't know. I have never had a problem getting ZA (any version) to work with my high-speed internet connection.

However, if the DNS fix doesn't work I hope we (Randy and I) can come up with some new ideas. (Randy uses Earthlink DSL, I use SBC DSL.)

Yes it may very well be what you need to fix your problem; if ZA is blocking your DNS Servers, you won't be able to surf anywhere. Here is the left half of that screen .. the forum won't allow me to upload the full screen of the ZA GUI, because the jpeg is too large.

Okey Marti, Now I see why it didn't work on my machine.

There's a paragraph that says "This IPCONFIG is
only available on a machine that has a network adaptor"

It'll probably work on his machine with the ethernet card....

You all have been a great deal of help to me on this.....Thanks people

Follow up on Zonealarm fix...AND THANKS to all of you who helped. I took bits and pieces from almost everyone..

entered IP address in trusted zone and internet zone

Entered Zonealarm permissions (two check marks)

Now my brotherinlaw will have to give a few permissions as he goes along (or denials)...

All this time I thought he was protected and all this time he was disabling ZA........
