"Lightning fast defrag!!"

Just learned this. If you want to defragment your hard drive, use the WinME defrag.
It's really very, very fast.

Oh well, guess since I don't at this forum, missed that one.
Hmmmm, with remarks like that, maybe some people will not share anymore. Besides, one makes a post at this forum, and within minutes, it's gone off the the next page.
I was always taught the only stupid question is the 'unasked' question. but here, seems people like to be very sarcastic. I'm glad ALL Americans aren't this way.

Andrini2000,

Oh well, guess since I don't at this forum, missed that one.
Hmmmm, with remarks like that, maybe some people will not share anymore.

I am really sorry that you took my remark that way. There was no sarcasm intended. It was actually to make available to you more information about what you were posting.

Besides, one makes a post at this forum, and within minutes, it's gone off the the next page.

As a matter of fact, the post I referenced was no more than halfway down the first page of the forum. But, you make a valid point about the many posts here.

I was always taught the only stupid question is the 'unasked' question. but here, seems people like to be very sarcastic..

You did not ask a question. I meant every word I said. No sarcasm was meant or intended.

I'm glad ALL Americans aren't this way.

Again, my posting was for your information and was not meant to be sarcastic.

Andrini2000,

I welcome more posts from you, wherever you are in the world.

Ok, well... my apologies!
One BIG thing I <hate> about the web, is that it's so easy to misunderstand what somebody says.
And, thinking about it myself, guess I just saw some of myself in your post, and maybe didn't like what I saw. In other words, I am too frickin' sarcastic at times.

Thanks

Hi andrini2000, You'll find that this is the friendiest and most helpful forum around and that dubber is a very courteous person and one of the most helpful. Members are from all around the world not only America, the great thing is that often you don't know where they are from, we are all just members of PC911.

You have a good one.

You have to watch out though. If you stick around, I am going to try to recruit you into our PC911 Cancer Research Team.

Andrini2000,

Someone may have missed the original post on this, (in fact, I did and I lurk here a lot ) so Dubber, who is truly one of the "Information Angels" of PC911 was merely providing you a link with more info for your benefit. He has never once uttered a sarcastic remark! Please feel welcome to continue posting any helpful tips you may find as you never know who might be seeing it for the first time!

I'm glad ALL Americans aren't this way.

It's comforting to note that you'll allow for the fact that all of the people of a certain country do not have to share a common personality trait. It's the first step in overcoming the bigotry exhibited in your above statement.

As you appeared to be too busy to read this before entering, I'll supply some exerpts you may find interesting:

Here are a few tips that will help you and others get the most out of our forum:

Read the existing forum messages. The answer to your question might already be there, or maybe there's an ongoing discussion thread that you can join rather than starting a new thread. There is also a powerful Search feature built in to help you find answers.

Do not post any material that is abusive, defamatory, infringing, obscene, pornographic, or otherwise offensive to other forum visitors. Keep it clean, watch your language, and don't post anything you wouldn't want your mother and/or your children to see. Any posts of this nature will be removed.

Do not post anything inflammatory with the intention of provoking arguments and antagonizing other posters.

Woah! That's the first time I ever heard of, as you put it, 'bigotry' on the web. I'm an American and proud of it, thank you very much I was born in Indiana, grew up in Wisconsin, and have lived all my adult life in sunny southern California. However, being in the work that I'm in, I'm afforded with the luxery to frequently go elsewhere. This, has given me a new perspective on my own country. Some traits are strictly America's. And alot of those I don't like. IE: law suits (over any and everything), greed, just to name 2. So if it's bigotry, it's only towards people's actions. Period.
So...as I stated, I was wrong, k?
thanks

It's Ok with me.

it's so easy to misunderstand what somebody says.

From the missing words and overall bad spelling and grammar in your second post, I thought that English might be your second language.

From that and the remark about Americans, I just knew you were from somewhere besides the USof A.

That's how easy it is to make an inaccurate assumption.

Sadly enough, Andretti, I've seen some bigoted posts on the Web, and even in this forum. Thank you for taking the time to let me know where you are coming from. In this particular period in American history, some of us are a bit touchier than usual about such things. Having shown in your subsequent posts in this thread what an open-minded person you are, I have no doubt you can see how your original post could have been misinterpreted.
I'll agree that greed and lawsuits are prevalent in modern American society, but I stick to my guns and say that every American does not share these traits.
I hope you'll consider Dubber's invitation to both come around often, and to help us out with the cancer project. Thanks for sharing the defrag info with us.

Andrini, as a regular here I'd also like to extend my welcome to you.   Looks like you had a bit of a rough spot at the beginning of this thread, but you seem to have settled your differences.   That's good, and I hope you stick around.   This is agreat place to hang and I think you're a great addition to this growing community.

However, in your post #9 you made a couple of comments with which I disagree rather strongly.   As I don't think McGee or anyone else have called you on these particular points in strong enough terms, I'm going to address them here.   (No offense, McGee, but I feel rather strongly that this should be cleared up.)

Specifically, Andrini, you said:

>... Some traits are strictly America's.

This is incorrect. Some perceived behaviors may (may, mind you) be more prevalent in one place than another, but Americans hold no monopoly on any human trait, be it fair or foul.

>... And alot of those I don't like. IE: law suits (over any and everything), greed, just to name 2.

Those two conditions are by no means unique to Americans.   To put a fine point on it, as an American, I'll thank you not to include me in such broad generalizations.

I appreciate that you were receptive to Dubber\'s constructive criticism of your rather defensive post.   That takes courage of a type few possess--due credit given.   I also appreciate that you were trying to clear up what you said; but to my mind, attributing such characteristics to Americans and no others is wrong.   Having said that, I'd appreciate a measure of temperance when it comes to generalizations or other unfair criticisms in this forum about any group of people, anywhere in this world.   You're free to post whatever you like, but when I see such statements, you can bank that I'll call you on it.

Wow McGee, I see you're from Puerto Rico. I worked out of San Juan for about 2 years on the cruise ships. And then worked at one of the casinos there. Forgot the name. I loved it there. And yes, I know that some things are very touchy. Thanks to the 'idiots' out there.
:'(
I'm so thankful I was brought up right. There's a great billboard near my home in L.A., it's a picture of two babies, one white, one black. And the caption says: "We weren't born with bigotry". And that's the truth. And true, not every American have those traits, but the number seems to be growing
And, I'm gonna go and check out that cancer project. I'll let you know.

While there's nobody that knows everything, there are some extremely knowledgable folks here. There are others, like me, that have managed to learn a few things along the way and try to throw in our .02 worth to try to help when we can.

The moderators of this site are bonafied computer gurus.

You will not find a more knowledgeable, experienced, articulate, intelligent, literate, and nicer group of moderators on the Internet.

Guys like me just pick up the leavings from them.

I have been fooling with computers 3 years now and still learn something new everyday.

Great thread goin here.

Yes, Welcome aboard Andrini!

This is a great place, and i am sure we all learn from it.

An interesting point has surfaced in this thread that i would like to add to. Text on the web does get easily confused, and many times I have walked out of here with my lip out, thinkin "well hell with that".

But it takes practice. You get to know who the people you are speaking to, thier level of knowledge etc, and after a while, you will notice how they type. Sometimes the replies are short and blunt. But most of the confusion comes out of one simple factor.. we cant see body language in here: no expressions and personality is almost impossible to display with just text.

Thank goodness for the little signatures and pics that are added in or I would avoid alot of the replies. The sigs add personality and character. Perhaps these sigs are the most important addition to any posting.

I myself try to use character in my replies, but this also can be misread, so I have to back up sometimes and just say what I mean ; nice, short and blunt.

Hang with us for a while, and you will get to know everyone, and it wont take too long to realize that all these people are great.

Soon you will be calling this place home

Going to check out your site now, and its great to meet you.

t_bare

Welcome Andrini!! We are all just on the path. Some further down the road than others. I've been on computers for a little more than three years. The more I learn, the more I know I don't know!! Having fun with it. Sometimes I can help out. Most of the time I just learn more new stuff and interact. I have fun here though. I like getting to know the people here and the sense of community. A big welcome to the UD team, a great cause.

I've only been around here since November. I've learned a lot. I've always been satified with any questions I've asked. I'm learning as much as I can so some day soon I'll be able to build my own computer.
I've heard much about the UC cancer program, I'm planning on downloading it tonight.
I found out about loosing important information through e-mails. But good people will ask questions and give people a chance to clearify.
Like here. Great forum!
thanks to all.

In response to andrini2000 (Reply # 14)

Andrini, welcome aboard in our quest to whup on cancer and the Pantywaists.
I've only lived in Puerto Rico for eight years, after living in Pennsylvania for most of my life. I've visited a couple of the neighboring countries, and learned how lucky I am to have been born in the U.S., warts and all.
There are people here running the full range from newbies to gurus. I've found that coming here and reading the posts is slowly but surely educating me. Somebody here will always be able to help us solve our problems.
Your mature handling of the initial misunderstandings in this post has gained my respect. I look forward to seeing more of your posts.

Would you, or someone, define "lightning fast?" Whether I use WinMe or Norton to defrag, it takes almost an hour. Oh, I do it once or twice a month

Lightning fast means compared to the Win98 defrag.
Doing it weekly will speed it up a lot. Plus, make sure you are shutting down everything but Explorer and Systray.

I defrag whenever I show 2 % fragment.I use Diskeeper 7.0 and I do not shut anything down and it takes 10 minutes while I'm reading the forum.

Schedule it to run automatically while you are sleeping, and you won't care how fast it is.

Well Scotterpops, I think that we, (Americans) are a little more, or maybe alot more <Sensitive> after the Sept. 11th attacks. Which I still cannot believe happened. And true, the USA does not have monopolies on any traits. However, being the great land that we are...we still have so many faults. I'm currently working in Hong Kong. And here, there are no gun shops. I feel safe. In Los Angeles, whenever I would hear a car back-fire, I would duck. Really. Gun shops in L.A. are like 7/11 stores. Just about on every corner. Here, no gun shops. Sure still crime, but for the most part, when you're walking down the street, you don't have to worry. My point is this: our country is the greatest, but still has so many faults. And being to a few different places, knowing of what foreigners think about the U.S. It has given me a different outlook. Made me more aware of my and my country's faults. That's all. I think that is what my previous post was trying to say. And, if you want to talk about unfair criticisms, I was here when <WE> the U.S.A. so-called accidentally bombed the Chinese Embassy during the Kosovo crap. I couldn't walk down the street without people glaring at me. I had to go to the U.S. Counselate at that time to renew my passport, and it was scary!! It's a good thing if people could be able to vier their own country from the outside in. Really gives one a different perspective. Don't knock it till you've tried it. I haven't been home for almost 8 years. So am still on the outside looking in. My summary? Every country is 50% good and 50% bad. The two traits that I previously mentioned, I hardly ever hear of over on this side of the world.
One thing for sure and that is it's so very easy to find fault. Whoever and wherever you are.

>... Made me more aware of my and my country's faults. That's all. I think that is what my previous post was trying to say.

Fair enough.   This I understand.   Across the board generalizations, I don't.

>... It's a good thing if people could be able to vier their own country from the outside in. Really gives one a different perspective. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

While I was born in this country, I was raised in South America (I'm half Brazilian).   English is not my first language.   And while I don't claim to be as well traveled as you (or anyone else), I have visited Central America, Europe and North Africa, not mention some quality time spent in Canada.   I speak two languages reasonably fluently and a few others passably.

Does that qualify?

>... I was here when <WE> the U.S.A. so-called accidentally bombed the Chinese Embassy during the Kosovo crap. I couldn't walk down the street without people glaring at me.

Sounds like you're making two erroneous assumptions here.   First, you seem to imply that the bombing wasn't an accident.   Hogwash.   Those kinds of statements aren't going to win friends and influence people around here.   Second, you seem to imply that because others in this world make "unfair criticisms" of Americans that it somehow diminishes or justifies your unfair and incorrect implications.   More hogwash.   All that means is that we're all far more alike than you give us credit for.

Nope. I truly believe that it was an accident. But hearing the people here speak out, I can sympathize. As they don't believe it was an accident. Especially when their commy govt. brainwashes them. Propaganda...ya know. But then again, I think every place has that kind of crap. Because we CANNOT believe everything in the news. And all govt's. only let us know the news they want us to know. The U.S. govt. is not all that great. Room for alot of improvement.
So anyway, two subjects I usually don't like to talk about, like so many other people are 1.)Politics, and 2.) Religion.
I won't comment on your statements any further.
I DO NOT need to justify myself to you nor any one else for that matter. Only to my God.
Thank you very much and have a nice da

Here in Canada, our government is screwy, but hardly "commie".

Didnt want to get into this one too much, but i do think that your off the mark by saying that if it isnt American, it must be communist.

Perhaps i could suggest coming up to Canada for a holiday, or perhaps spend some time in life travelling to other countries. There are great countries that have NOTHING to do the U.S, and although im not thoroughly convinced that you mean any harm, i do know your wrong.

Have to side with Pops on this one.

Just my 2 cents...which would cost about 3.04 cents Canadian.

I am not a guru, however the one thing I have learned about defrag speed for me is to keep the partition size down. Of course this requires more frequent defrag, but time is reduced.

I just love Canada. Worked in Vancouver, did a cruise ship from Vancouver to Alaska, 7 days up and 7 back down, traveled throughtout Ca. while working with the Chinese acrobats. I went to, I think it's called Grousse Mtn? Excellent fun!! And I grew up in northern Wisc. We used to go up to Cold Bear, and did alot of camping around there. Sault Saint Marie also very nice. I love the place and the people are very friendly. Don't know if you remember, but in the winter of 93/94 it was sooooooo cold. Especially when driving through the Rockies. And I'm so glad that American cars have the km/hour on the same speedometer with the U.S. Makes it so much easier.lol

Have to agree with CoolKid that Power Defrag is fast. If you watch the "details" you can see the difference in the speed. And it's freeware, too. (a little over 2 megs for the beta 2.10 version) Find it at www.powerdefrag.com

"Power Defrag 2.10 is a system tool designed to optimise the performance of the Windows 95, 98, 98SE and ME Disk Defragmenter applet."

Hmmmmm ... that sounds suspiciously like advertizing department BS.   That's the problem with this kind of ad copy--it's unclear exactly what they mean.   Usually, they are being deliberately vague when they make such statements.

Do they mean that PowerDefrag isn't a defragmentation program in its own right?   Does it simply run Windows' own Defrag utility with all the options turned off (like program optimization and others) and that's why it's so fast?   If so, then you can do the same thing at the command line, and I'll do with being patient and letting Windows Defrag do a nice, thorough job of it myself.

The November trip was on the Golden Princess. Even with the Gaetano thing, it was excellent. I heard others making the identical comments about seeing him one too many times.
Why don't you send your resume to P&O with a link to this thread. My SOP can get links to similar comments on threads at some of the cruise forums if ya want.

Thanks mickster. I'm currently working in Hong Kong and China. So at this time...no time. The cruise ships out of Asia are also very nice. I think they copied Carnival, as one of their ships here is identical to the Ecstasy.
