"Bios Question"
Thu Aug-07-03 04:06 PM by aa1aq

I recently purchased an 80 GB Western Digital HD. My present Award Bios
is dated 05/31/2001. This bios supported my 40 GB Maxtor HD.

The 40 GB started to make noise and my system would shut down. I will use the 40 GB as a slave until it dies.

What are my chances of my presnt bios supporting the new 80 GB drive?

Your bios probably won't be bothered by the large drive; My mobo is a pretty old Soyo Board and it works just fine with my 80 gig maxtor.

If you do run into problems, though, you can always flash your bios and it should work fine.

I tried to update my bios but they seem to want me to pay for that information now. I think this was "WIM'S" site. I didn't look around too much. Times sure have changed.

Thanks for the reply

What kind of MB is it? You should go to the MB manufacturers site not some third party. The manufacturer should have the BIOS update for free.

What is the model of your motherboard, and what version of BIOS? Have you tried connecting the 80G to see if it is recognized correctly?

Mobo is K7SEM ver 1.1

Bios is AWARD. This is the display on bottom of screen on boot up:
05/31/2001 SIS-730-6A67SE19C-00
Hope this is the info you are asking for.

I tried booting the 80 GB by itself and it was recognized. I didn't go any further.

BTW, I think I'm having problems having both drives being recognized.
I'll make another post if I need to.

Thanks for the reply.

P.S. The display on top of the screen is
Award Modular Bios V 6.00PG.

Sorry I missed that.

If the drive was recognized and booted, then you probably don't need a BIOS update. But if you think a BIOS update is in order, you don't have to pay for it, here they are:

Never get a BIOS update anywhere except from the original motherboard or computer manufacturer. All BIOS's are customized for the board manufacturer.
