Pentium4 2 GHz
512 Mb RAM
Gigabyte motherboard with intel 845 chipset
Radeon 7500 AGP
ATA 100... Maxtor 40 Gig hard disk
Plain Jane Creative Soundblaster 128 PCI card

#11. "Side topic: Winamp skins"
In response to Grogan (Reply # 7)

While we're on the side topic, below are some of my favorite Winamp skins for the moment. Notes:

- skin names in ALT text for IE users
- slow going for 56K users - sorry
- that Sony stereo skin ("ExpensiveHi-Fi") is also in my list
- I usually don't use or display my equalizer because it takes up so much space
- most of these designs don't deviate very far from the original layout, the point being to keep the buttons clear and accessible

Look at my message just above yours. That Sony skin is actually called "ExpensiveHi-Fi" and is in fact available at winamp.com; I should know since that's where I got it from.

I never once said that the skin wasn't there; I said Winamp.com has crappy skins. Yeah there are a few good ones but the majority of them are just Skinner specials. 1001Winampskins has, IMHO, a better quality of skins.

I wasn't replying to you, but to AdLib. However, you thought I was replying to you instead!

>Yeah there are a few good ones

Just my own two kopeks.
Well, there's a line I have to draw personally between works of art and what you call "Skinner specials." There are some very dramatic examples at 1001, and I definitely appreciate the time and talent put into them. But at the end of the day, I always go back to a certain style. If you were curious to visit my little collage of favorite WinAmp skins (posted earlier), you might deduce that my utmost priority is functionality. I can't be bothered to remember all the keyboard shortcuts for WinAmp, so the buttons on the faceplates have to be clear in appearance and intent. Winamp.com has given me a small but useful pile of skins that let me do my thing just fine...

Again, function over form is why I also prefer WinAmp 2.x over 3.x.

Here's my messy desktop that I've been using lately.
Had to reduce size to meet 50kb size limit.

In case anybody is wondering, this screenshot reflects my use of WindowBlinds 3.5, a shareware GUI skinning utility for Windows by Stardock. The skin is called Saphardana, one of about five dozen I rotate on a daily basis. I quite like this one, but it's more subtle than flashy. I have others that are very dramatic...

Since I have power to burn for this sort of esthetic application, it was worth the $20. Among other things, it takes care of that jarring background for the icon names by making it transparent against the desktop graphic.
