""GoBack" in XP BIOS Problem. Please HELP !!!!"

Moved up in the world and got HP Pavilion 553 loaded with XP. Purchased NSW 2003 and have known issue with "GoBack". Still waiting from support help from both Symantec and Roxio. Upon bootup, get black screen with white blinking cursor. Windows will not load until "GoBack" disabled. Both vendors describe issue as with "Pheonix BIOS" and how to change settings. I do not have Pheonix BIOS, but have "Award" BIOS. Neither vendor has replied after two requests for help during last two weeks. They claim turn around time up to 48 hours...yeah. As far as the descibed Motherboard issue, I have an Intel, not one of those listed below from Roxio support website. Anybody else have "GoBack" problem, and how did you get this "WinXP Compatible" program to work? Thanks.
Tom

From Roxio:
45. Reboot to a blinking cursor in top left corner of screen After installing GoBack, the installation proceeds to reboot the system. On the reboot, immediately after the GoBack boot screen, the system halts at a blinking white cursor in the top left corner. This information applies to the following products: - GoBack ALL VersionsThis information applies to the following Operating Systems:- Windows 95 (GoBack 2.x, 3.0x and 3.1x versions ONLY)- Windows 98- Windows Me (GoBack 2.2x and 3.x versions ONLY)- Windows NT 4 (GoBack 3.x versions ONLY)- Windows 2000 (GoBack 3.x versions ONLY)- Windows XP (GoBack 3.1x versions and above ONLY) Resolving this issue requires the user to access the Phoenix BIOS setup. If you are not familiar with the BIOS, you may want to have an advanced computer user help you with this task. The system BIOS is most often accessed by pressing one of the following keys during boot: DEL, ESC, F1, F2, or F10 . One of the first screens you see during the boot process should tell you which key to hit to enter the BIOS setup. Once the BIOS is loaded, you will see a list of menus. Select the BIOS FEATURES SETUP heading with the arrow keys and press Enter. Using the up and down arrows again, select the value listed to the right of PhoenixNet Installation (it should say Yes). Change the value to No by pressing the Page Up or Page Down key. Once the value has been changed to No, press the ESC (Escape) key once to return to the main menu. Find and select the option to Save Changes and Exit and press Enter. Type a y to confirm and you will exit the BIOS. If GoBack is currently enabled, your system should boot straight past the GoBack screen and proceed to load your Operating System. If GoBack is disabled, re-enable it from the desktop. If GoBack is uninstalled, re-install it and allow your system to reboot. CAUSE Incompatibility with PhoenixNet Installation option in some system BIOS's. (See the table below for more info) MORE INFORMATION If you do not have the option PhoenixNet Installation in your BIOS, you will need to flash (upgrade) your system BIOS to the newest version by visiting the website of your motherboard manufacturer. If flashing the BIOS is something you've never done before, you should seek assistance, as it is possible to damage your motherboard BEYOND REPAIR. The most common motherboards affected by this issue are:Manufacturer Known Model(s) Affected Web Address
Soyo 7VBA-133, 6VCA, K7VIA, 6VBA http://www.soyousa.com/686bios.html
Biostar M7VKB http://www.biostar-usa.com/Bios/bios_index_page.html
Lucky Star K7VAT http://www.lucky-star.com.tw
***Biostar currently does not have a BIOS revision available that adds the ability to disable the PhoenixNet Installation option. If you have the affected Biostar motherboard, there is no current workaround available. Keep an eye on their website for later BIOS updates.

Nope, I've never had this problem. I do have a Phoenix Bios flashed with the latest update but it does not include the "PhoenixNet Installation" option. Nor do I have Win XP.

The GoBack included with NSW does not come with all the features included in the deluxe purchased version, though this is not pertinent to your problem. In my opinion the included version is not much better than the "recovery" feature included with XP. For the time being, why not uninstall GoBack and rely on Win XP's System Recovery until a solution is found? GoBack isn't doing you any good if it has to be disabled each time you boot up.

Jim.

KJT,
Ran "GoBack" v.2 in now dead Compaq/Win98. Want GB because it reverts the entire hard drivewith user settings, programs etc, not just Win data files. Anybody else out there get their "non Pheonix BIOS" to allow GB to work?

It works perfectly on my wife's Win 2000 equipped IBM laptop with an IBM BIOS.

Hopefully someone with XP will come along.

Jim.

I hope so. This has been going on since first install of "GoBack" on 17 December. Just emailed Roxio "Support" for the third time and received automated responce claiming they are reviewing problem and will hear from them 24-48 from now. Not holding my breath.

I can't link you directly to the page in the GoBack forum but here's how one person solved the problem:

Quote:
"Enter the BIOS Setup and check for a BIOS level anti-virus boot sector protection running from the MB. Disable any reference to "virus alert", "virus warning" or "boot sector virus protection", Save and Exit the BIOS Setup. This may be the issue." End Quote

No specific BIOS is mentioned.
