Press the Print Screen key to capture the whole screen
Press Alt-Print Screen to capture just the active window.

This copies the screen into the clipboard, and you can then paste it into your image software such as MS Paint and then you save it to a file.

I Forget, what is stopping you from saving this picture in your PC, and after selecting Stretch in your Display/Desktop settings use it as your wallpaper?

http://www.geocities.com/one_human/advanced.html#mspaint_fix

BTW, all I had to do to get my MS Paint to save a .jpg and .gif was to open Paint and drag a .jpg to it, save it as a .jpg and do the same with .gif.

Paint will save it as a jpg file. Just click on save as and at the bottom of the "save as" box it says "save as type" Open the drop down box and click "jpg import". It will then be saved as a jpg file.

Balo, what Paint will "save as" varies from installation to installation, so what you say isn't true for everyone. It may have something to do with whether or not you have Office installed, but it certainly does vary.

It's OK for you to post this but if I had of posted it there would have been a flame. LOL.

Seriously, when I do a print screen, it shows the whole desktop and when I do alt-print screen simultaneously it still shows the whole desktop, rather than just the open window. How do I get it to do the right thing????

#25. "RE: How to save desktop ?"
In response to Backward Bob (Reply # 22)

Dee-
*sigh* No I didn't make those pics & before my hard drive crash I had backed-up all my important files except for my favorites so I no longer have the link to site. As I recall they were having a contest and you could vote on the entries. I had a dial-up connection at the time so I didn't get to save very many pics. My computer usually froze every time I accessed the site *sigh*.

Bob-
Are you referring to the difficulties 56ker's will have opening this picture heavy post? That did cross my mind but me and Mike were on a roll, oh well.}> I'll be removing my pics later on tonight.

Re your keyboard problem, were you ever able to use that method with current keyboard? Is the window that you're trying to copy the 'active' one before you do alt-print scrn? Have you tried reinstalling keyboard software/drivers? If all else fails try this handy free utility http://www.pc-magazin.de/datatip/common/dtt/file.php3?areaid=58&fileid=353

Sorry for sending you to a non-english site, but the original creators of program no longer offer the free version.

I got the translated version just fine. Only trouble is that it did not tell me anything.

Or, I am too dumb to get it, which is a distinct possibility.

Bob-
Hehe, that translation does leave a bit to be desired.

Anyway if you keep Print Key in the System Tray (or click on a short-cut) it will take the place of the Print-Scrn key. When you press print-scrn the Print Key program will open in its own window. Then you press 'Rectangle' on the menu, Print Key will disappear and then you left-click & use the crosshairs to outline the area you wish to copy, unclick, Print Key returns, select Copy then you can paste your selection to Paint ETC. There's more it can do but that's the basics.

Here's the page for the Pro Version...

I was talking about talking about women.

I have a microsoft internet keyboard pro. Think it might be the keyboard which makes both ways alt-print screen and print screen alone produce the same results??

Waaaa, your link took me to a blank page. German can be a difficult language to translate, eh

Bob-
Well Mike1 is not a woman and no one flamed him. He started it...did not, did too, did NOT!

Nah, I doubt it could be the keyboard brand. I've never met a keyboard that couldn't do alt-print scrn. And I've met all of 4 keyboards in my entire life.

(sotto voce)
did too!

Well I see some of us are still in a sharing mood (thanks Bob G) so I rifled through some of my backups and found some more wallpapers. We will now ensure that this is one of the longest loading threads on PC911 .

BTW, Roni, Bug Swarm is such an apt name for that first pic I think I'll change the title. Oh no, wait a sec, it's already named Bug Swarm }> .

Yomama, right click on any picture and "Save Picture As..." then do what Roni said.

Mike1, you really should try the 30 day free trial of Print Screen Pro. It allows you to copy other shapes ie circles, oval, not too sure if it does free form shapes.

Lonnie, sometimes we just don't get something so a tool that works for doing the same thing is very helpfull. I understand how to do all of the above but I still use such a tool. It's a free product called Screen Print from www.softwarelabs.com. It resides in your System Tray and has all of the fuctions you will ever need. In spite of the fact I know how to use all of the above, I still use Screen Print.

Sir Winston Churchill: "Never, never, never quit."

Try again:

1 - Press the "Ctrl" key and HOLD IT

2 - Press the "Prnt Scrn" key

3 - Release both keys

4 - Open Paint

5 - Click "Edit"

6 - Click "Paste" and there you are.

IMPORTANT: If you have an Office Keyboard or other keyboard with an "F Lock" button, be sure that it is on if not the "Prnt Scrn" key wont work.

Lonnie
have you tried Alt+PrtScn ? Ctrl+PrtScn doesn't work for me either . Print screen alone does as does Alt+PrtScn .

mine works with Alt+PrtScn, Ctrl+PrtScn and also PrtScn alone!, so all this time I've been pressing Alt just for nothing

What Keyboard do you have Lonnie? a Standard one?

PrtScn will capture everything in the Sreen.
Alt+PrtCrn will capture the Active Application in the Screen.

That's transparent to the end user, when you press PrtScn the image is saved in the Clipboard, you don't need to open the Clipboard to do that but if you want to do it, go to Start, then Run..., type clipbrd and press OK, the image will be there also.
But I'll say it again, you don't need to be concerned about where the image is, just press PrntScn, Open Paint, go to Edit, then Paste, if the program ask you to enlarge the size of the picture say yes.

Sheesh, what is up with that Prt Scrn key? Backward Bob also has a problem with his key.

Lonnie, can you copy and paste anything at all into Paint? Try right clicking on Roni's signature, select Copy, open Paint & click on Edit. Is the Paste option available this time? If so then we'll know it's just your Prnt Scrn key and not some other problem. Still won't be able to fix original problem but er, um, whatever
