"Opinion on browsers?"

:D Havent posted much because Ive been extremely busy, but have been reading. I am curious as to which browser is your favorite? Tried Netscape...didnt like it, have had IEXPL and am gradually getting tired of it,and have read some things about Mozilla, Opera, and a few others. Which is the one you like best and why? Can you tell I am shopping?

Thanks~ Lori

I've tried several, and have been most pleased with Phoenix. Phoenix is essentially Mozilla with a re-designed interface, which is optimized for speed and size. It's much more responsive and slicker than the standard Mozilla UI.

I switched to free Opera 6.05 when I was having some problems with IE SP1 and now is my main browser .
In my WinME system it is faster than IE and very stable. It has a good popup stopper and a back button that rocks!!
I also like Phoenix 0.5.
I use IE rarely when Opera doesn't open a page...

Hi Lori!

I'd suggest Phoenix too, but have also a look at the new Opera7 (www.opera.com): it's still in beta (not free, if you don't pay, you will have a little advertisement window...) but very stable and really fast (faster than IE, Mozilla and Phoenix at startup)

Ciao

I've only used the big three (Opera, Moz and IE) for any length of time, and to me it's just a big, annoying, frustrating compromise.

Mozilla has a lot of nice features, looks good, has great 3rd party support for add-ons, but its UI is clunky beyond belief and it's stability is worst of the three for me.

I loved Opera6, but Opera7 stripped out the mode I used and they haven't put it back yet, so I'm angry enough about that to be working seriously on getting banned from their forum. But still, it's the snappiest by far, but also the ugliest (skinable though) and they seem to be moving toward a more "commercial" approach, nag screen included.

My mouse and spell checker have problems in both Moz and Opera7 (fine in O6.) Got another mouse on order, but it fascinates me that new browsers have so many mouse problems (the Opera beta forum is full of complaints.)

Crazybrowser wins my vote for its pop-up blocking and multiple window tabs. I'm sure it has other good features I haven't discovered yet.

Thanks for so much info on Opera.....I havent really read much on that one so it really helps. I have a dsl connection, but speed is nice any time and any place and get a lot of errors with IEXPL 5.5. In the past when I try to upgrade to anything other than what came packaged with the Win ME( 5.5 ), I have
trouble after that, so when I reinstalled I didnt upgrade to any newer version, but still get errors, and it closes. Crazybrowser I have just begun to hear about. Also, one other question I had in mind, do I need to worry about whether Outlook Express is compatible with the browser I choose? It seems so integrated with Internet Explorer that it crossed my mind.

Thanks~

You asked about Crazy Browser.

As a user of CB, let me hasten to tell you - before we are told again - that Crazy Browser is not a "true" browser, merely a sort of front end for Internet Explorer.

In fact, you do need IE installed before you can run CB, but if you do install it you will soon become aware of how superior will be your browsing experience, compared with IE.

CB may not be a browser in the sense that Opera and Mozilla are, but it enjoys a number of very important features lacking in IE (IE6 in my case).

Equally, most programs and plug-ins which are compatible with IE, work with Crazy Browser and that respect it has some clear advantages over both Opera annd Mozilla, IMHO of course.

I love it and it's free!!

I've had pretty good luck with IE 6.0. I had to run the "IE Repair" under Add/Remove one time and it's done fine ever since. I think every browser will eventually have it's own unique issues to crop up.

I have to agree with Norm.

I find Mozilla clean (I use "Early Blue") very fast, smooth, no problems of any kind.
As for your question about Outlook Express E-mail program you can still use that no matter what browser you are using. I much prefer the E-mail client that comes with Mozilla (Mozilla Messenger)

Lori, glad u started this thread as I've been wondering myself what everybody here prefers.

I dunno why everybody dislikes IE so much. I've been running 5.5 (SP2) just fine w/ barely any problems for the past 2 years or so. I did try Crazybrowser recently and wasn't so crazy about it. It was very slow to load (slower than IE) and didn't particularly like the way it would open up a new tab when i typed in a URL.

I might consider trying out Phoenix and see how it compares.

WOW...you guys are awesome with your quick and friendly answers Guess I am leaning towards Mozilla right now, but still reading at a lot of the sites you all mentioned. I guess I agree with the comment on paying for a browser. Im not too cheap, but I tend to spend my limited money on bandwidth, and websites right now Glad I can still use Outlook Express though! Being a webmistress, I am really going to miss the Google toolbar :'(

One more little question to some who do.........

I ran Netscape and IEXPL on the same machine with no trouble. Is there any good reason not to use 2 browsers? Like many of you said, they all have some different features, so if you like 2....is that a bad idea? Example: Could I keep Internet Explorer/Google toolbar for the work I do on the web, and then also use Mozilla for just my "goofing" off surfing?

Thanks so much for giving all of your opinions so I can at least make an informed decision

NO pop ups? I cant even imagine no popups! Would be great to not see those anymore!!!

I have Crazy Browser installed a long with all the other browsers mentioned in this thread and I have used Crazy Browser. You really should take a look at My IE2 if you like Crazy Browser. You may end up not liking it but My IE2 does have more features than Crazy Browser. As far as speed they are all fast on cable so it is hard for me to compare.

Well, there is really no technical reason not to use two browsers, if you so wish. but I tend to like just using one. It's a matter of preference.. I like the tabbed browsing feature a lot. Makes it easy for me to go through all these posts in an organized manner.

Chewy

With a proper installation Phoenix (v0.5) is extremely fast and can be given nearly the same functionality as the standard issue of Mozilla. Either beats IE both in terms of speed and security (although I suspect that more holes in the Mozilla code would be turned up and exploited if more people used the browser.)

I'm using Mozilla more and more, except here, because Mozilla, this forum and a wheel mouse just don't play nice together. Start to scroll a long thread here with the wheel and the thread just takes off scrolling and won't stop. Bloody annoying!

Well I'm now using Opera 7 beta 2 after progressing from 6.05 and can find no faults with it.

It is fast and stable and now only stops unrequested pop ups. A great browser. I can live with the ads (when they kick in - after 14 days apparently !!).

Opera now even works on my secure banking sites (which 6.05 didn't) so Ive abandoned IE and CB entirely !!

Oh and I've also ditched Startdownloader as Opera has a download manager built in

On the advice of Al, I started using Opera when it was in version 5, and stayed with it for quite a while. The newest version I tried really sucked, so back to IE I went. With the crazy browser plugin its nice, although its not too intelligent. Some of my classes require that I do online stuff at The Bridge @ WSU, and crazy browser just hates it.

Crazy Browser isn't much use with dual monitors because right-click/Open in New Window actually means Open in New Tab, which sort of beats the point of having dual monitors.

But then I guess most people don't have dual monitors, hey!

My IE2 runs best if you have IE6 installed. I didn't notice what you had but I thought I would let you know that the developer recommends it for best performance in My IE2.

Not that I have anything against MYIE2, far from it, but when you use Crazy Browser, you don't need the Google Toolbar.

Just insert your text/url in the Address box, press ALT+RET and you get the full Google search - every time.

Although I really like CB, I am now taking a good look at MY IE2 - am interested in the fact that, in terms of resources, it has a much smaller footprint than CB.

Download complete!!

Regards

Mitch

Here is a link to the My IE2 forum. You will be able to download skins and get helpful tips. The forum seems to be down right now but try it later.

Nah, tabbed browsing and mouse gestures are just too much fun, and incredibly useful. I guess you get some or all of it in the various IE front ends out there, but I'm getting pretty fond of Moz, and much as I hate to admit it, the skins are kind of cool too. This ones pretty tasty and packs a lot of useful stuff in a small but clear area. Too bad I still can't tell one PCQ&A forum from the other

I have tried them all like everyone else, and always go back to IE6, works the best with everything else. As said with cable or dsl they all load pretty fast. I set it up so all my searches are google anyway. Not that google is the best anymore, but thats another discussion. I like the pic resizer and the ability to e-mail or print photo right from pic
To each his own.

Bob My IE2 has all that. The only real advantage of Mozilla as I see it is the additional security over IE.

Just to add a touch more spice, I saw another browser that seems to be a fairly popular download, Avant Browser. Get it from
www.avantbrowser.com

Did you download version 0.6835 and are you running IE 6? I have never had a crash with My IE2.

I have been following Avant Browser and have it installed but it does not have as many features as My IE2. If you like to skin the browser not much is available for Avant Browser.

I would suggest that you post your problem to the My IE2 forum. I know they would want to know about this problem so they can look into a fix. Here is the link to the forum:

After reading this thread I tried MyIE2 and must say it is better than Crazy Browser.

I like the way you can have a page of links open and hold the shift key and a new link opens right beside the tab you are at. Crazy browser would jump to that link and shift the row of tabs and I couldn't keep my place. In myie I can stay at the page I am on and go to the other tabs after they have loaded.

Also java has not been working for me in IE6 unless I use sun Java.
Java works fine in myie2.

So thanks Ranger Bob I like myie2.

I use My IE2. It is a browser interface for IE that gives you tab browsing and a built in pop-up stopper. You can setup startup groups that allow you to start the browser and have several websites come up at once. Any IE plug ins that you might have installed will migrate to My IE2. If you have Google Bar installed in IE it will also be available in My IE2. My IE also has mouse jesters just like Opera. It is freeware.
