The update failed several times, now the update site tells me there are no updates available. Where could I get it other than the update site?

I had trouble with the windows update site yesterday evening (Wed, 11/11/02) it was extremely slow even though I run broadband.

Had trouble again this morning running the site extremely slow. It downloaded and installed all updates except the VM update it failed.
In fact it failed twice.

Seems to be something wrong with the site so I'll be waiting a few days before I go back to update.

Darlene
Hi,

I have a XP Java problem, I have a 2yr. old HP Pavilion Computer, Pentium 4, 128mg RDRAM, 1.4 GHz. It came installed with Windows Me, In August 2002, I had a major crash, I tried to reinstall Windows Me with the recovery disks, but then they couldn't find a cab file and it locked. That is when I pushed the button and had Windows XP installed professionally. They had a lot of problems and told me my computer was real touchy. When I brought it home, all the pages that I went to came up with I needed Java Virtual Machine. and sent me to Microsoft web site to get it. Well Microsoft was in a lawsuit and said they were no longer installing it, so I went to Sun Microsystems and downloaded it there. Well when Microsoft sent down there was an update for a patch for Java I thought that might be a problem and it was. My whole system crashed again. I was ready to take it back to the Computer Place that installed it, and during my sleepless night I thought of System Restore. It never worked on Windows Me, so I had no great expectations. Well it worked. I was so happy I disconnected Windows Update and knew I could never get sp1. Well there are a lot of hot fixes they had put on at the Computer Place, and after reading these forums I am glad I didn't. I don't think it will work with Roxio's Adaptec 5 which was installed because 4 was not compatible. I have uninstalled Java from my Add /Remove panel but they would not uninstall Java 2 Runtime; Environment,Sev 1.4.0 My Java is working better than ever, so I thought, maybe this was needed for Microsoft, because they wouldn't let me uninstall it no matter how I tried and they had settled their lawsuit. Now the problem. They are sending down 3 updates (I reconnected it), and one is for Java. Can I get it or do you think it will wreck my system again. My System Restore had not worked the last couple times I tried it, it was not even making restore points. Since then I stopped 6 programs from loading every time I started and it started making Restore Points again but I don't trust it. Would appreciate any help because Idon't think they want to see me at the Computer Place again, and I can't afford it anyhow. Buy the Way, I have downloaded the Virtual Machine 3805 from PCWorld, but not installed it. If thay is what Grey Falcon wanted.

3805 is the "current" Java VM, the update installs 3809. So you don't want to install 3805 as it has the problem the update (supposedly) fixes. I don't trust Windows Update for drivers, but for system stuff, if it says you need it, and you think you do, it should install without problems. That doesn't mean an update won't cause problems, but if it does, it will be for a lot of people. In other words it should be able to accurately tell if your particular system can use a particular update.

There are about 30 million people that will be downloading those updates, apparently you have not been granted first in line status. Sorry about that...

I went there and found the updates downloading extremely slowly (even on cable), so I aborted them and will go back later, without whining.

I'm glad I came to the forum to see what was going on with the Windows updates, that is all I had to do is try to download it and it not take. I would of had a cow!!! I just checked my calendar, Sept. 19th,2002 that is the java patch that wrecked my Windows XP, I guess it didn't like my Virtual Machine from Sun. Thanks for letting me know about Java 3809. I don't have a clue what I have on here now since Sun only let me uninstall one of their programs and not the other. But it is working better than before, so something is still on. I was trying to get the nerve to put the JVM 3805, that is why I had it downloaded, but not installed. I didn't want Microsoft to get mad if they tried to patch it and it was not there. lol I still don't know if I should try the update later or not. How can they patch what might not be there. I think I am way over my head on this Java thing.

Isn't this just a search engine that searches your computer to see if what updates you need?...I have always worked around this thing in the past and was able to download all critical updates I needed. I usually go to Microsoft TechNet to get them.Crockett

No, it does not search your computer. It downloads an index of available updates that compares the index to your installed updates and returns a list of what updates your computer does not yet have. No data about you or your programs and data are sent to MS.

It seems you people are further along than I am. Many of you speak of slow downloads and the server is down. I have tried at the Windows Update site (direct and through the bulletin link) and all I ever get after a scan is "no updates available," yet my Java is 5.00.3805. I don't recall past notifications such as this referring you to the Windows Update site.

Yesterday, I was unable to get updates for Windows 98 SE with IE 5.0. All I could get was "There are no updates available." To upgrade Internet Explorer required manually downloading the setup file.

Windows Update seems to running today, though still a bit slow at times.

4 hours ago I upgraded both my networked computer and my main one from the Update site without a hitch. Took about 20 mins each and I'm on 56K dialup on the other side of the world.

Allyn, It has been the same old c**p for me today and it seems so stupid M$ would notify me they have an update yet after I wait and wait for the scan to complete they say no updates are available. I have Win 98SE and IE6 SP1. I'm not clear on this. Did you get the VM update?

I did. But it was very slow to start. Once it began, download speed was only slightly faster than a 56K modem.

I've Windows 98 SE on my first partition and it's also on my wife's computer. Don't know what the problem is with MS. I've heard unsubstantiated rumors about MS server problems. I do know there are some routers out-of-service associated with the North American internet backbone. But I really don't know how much impact that would have. The remaining routers seem to be picking up most of the traffic.

I did have a problem with Windows XP when downloading the VM update this morning. I think the cause of it originated with Windows Update on Microsoft's end.

Perhaps Microsoft has been hacked again. That would be very embarassing to disclose given the current security-conscious environment and their security initiative.

Well, I believe I finally got the VM security update. After the 5.1 MB download, installation started but soon after I got an error message re IE (don't know exactly what) and things completely died. After I restarted I checked JView and found 5.00.3809 whereas it had been 5.00.3805 before my download. Windows Update through the security bulletin link still told me no updates available, but then I went to the update site through my Start menu (again) and finally got a few listings (nothing else I wanted). What I don't understand is MS always offers me a security update for Media Player 7.1. I removed that program months ago and went back to 6.4. At least I'm done with them until the next cycle starts, which probably isn't far away. It took me about 19 minutes on dialup and Scaramouche says it took him a whopping ONE minute

I just downloaded VM...about 20 mins on dialup...installation seemed
to be okay...reboot uneventful...but when I check Belarc, it doesn't show that it actually installed. (Would it show there?) Whatever.....at least I got it. - - Just checked Microsoft Update site; shows VM update successful.

Did this at 3:30AM in Michigan...

I have cable...but last night @ 11PM (12/12), I downloaded the VM...took 45minutes to do this, but the installation was so fast I blinked and it was done. Did daughter's this morning (5AM)...hers took 5 minutes for 8 different ones that we couldn't d/l&install previously...she is on cable also! SHEESH. But for her, when going back to update site..stated that she has 8 goodies to d/l & install...which was done as successful...methinks M$ programmers need to fix a few bugs. }>

Yesterday the Update site was very slow, I started to download and aborted it when I saw how bad it was, tonight it was a tad slow but not bad.
