"zonealarm"

hi to everyone
i have just moved up to win xp home.after a clean install and i was expecting somethings from my computer, maybe hardware & some of the programs may not now be compatable which turned out to be true, but may main concern is that when i downloaded the latest version of the free zonealarm program it was interfering with my web browsing and many graphics would not display until i stopped it operating then all was well,so could it be my setting on zonealarm i had it set to default or does anyone know of this as a known problem.obviously i dont want to be without its protection

i have another problem about text but maybe it should be on another thread

grateful for anyhelp received. yorkybar

Two weeks ago i upgraded ZA Free version to3.129 and i had to get rid of it completely, i should have left the old version on the pc! I was having problems with slow start ups and Shutdowns and like you said other things, come to find out that it is a Resource Hog! Cannot use it on my pc which is xp and ME I know you don't want to switch, but you will find out that you may have too! If you do decide, there is a very good firewall called "Outpost", Just thought you would want to know. Tom

Hey yorkybar

Here's an even better one. It's freeware and it's called Sygate Personal Firewall, at: www.sygate.com/free/spf_download.htmirewall

Test it here:

http://scan.sygatetech.com/prestealthscan.html

Just so can see one of your Firewall options.

I'm using ZA free, 31.291 on both XP home, and XP Pro with excellent results. I would argue whether Sygate is better. I ran the Sygate scan and ALL ports showed as blocked as Sygate said they should ideally. I've run every test i have ever come across and ZA has always passed them all, how much more can you ask? ZA has always been among the best listed by any review by anyone i have ever read.

Yup. Just follow their directions and if you have questions, visit their site. You have to take responsibility for your system by using software as directed. Zone Alarm works.

I'm using ZAP and it works OK. I've also used Sygate Pro and Outpost. All three pass the required "Stealth" tests. ZAP uses more resources, appear to have more complaints and more complicated uninstalling (for people who don't read instructions).
If your OS is XP the resources part should not matter.
The drawback with Sygate and Outpost is that you require "some knowledge" in the configuration. Again that means reading. But to their credit they both have very helpful Forums.
All three FWs, together with KERIO, I would highly recommend, from experience.

scaramouche, as far as configuration goes with sygate free personal firewall and windows m.e. there was hardly any, as a matter of fact after i downloaded it i thought i forgot to do something because it was all set up already . i just had a couple of yes's to aknowledge and that was it, surprisingly simple, maybe the pro version is different? i don't know, but this free version was a no brainer to configure.

i have to agree with mitch, sygate isn't as intrusive as zone alarm and easier to un-install if need be. i like sygate free personal fire wall also, and it also does the job.

my 2 cents, billy

Yes Sygate's default settings work well. But the Pro version is more configurable. Sygate is a reliable Firewall.
The only reason I stayed with ZAP is that I have a subscription from a year ago. It requires a long list of Registry keys to delete on uninstallation and Zone Labs keeps a "hidden" file which activates the old key on reinstallation. I hate that.
Actually i'm not that paranoid on security. If it does the necessary blocking, gives no trouble I just forget about it.

i agree, i also am not paranoid about security, like you , i feel as long as it does the job blocking, and giving no problems, thats good enough for me, although others may differ.

No way I would trade in my ZA Pro (or ZA Free on some of my machines) for any other software firewall in existance.
