"Computer's tricks and secrets"

There are several computer's tricks that seem to be undocumented or not documented at all, some of them are really neat and for sure some of you know one or two that you use, it is also sometimes difficult to track the really useful ones as some web pages list some you rarely use and some others are not listed at all.

So I decided to start this thread to share those little secrets and tricks.

Here are two that I can share.

1- If you have a wheel mouse you can click the wheel and it creates an anchor in the page you are, do this in one side of a long web page, a double arrow cursor is also displayed over the anchor, if you move this double arrow, below or above the anchor, the page is going to start scrolling in that direction, if the distance from the anchor is small, the page would start scrolling at a good speed for reading, if you move it a little farther away, it would scroll faster, I have found that the UP and DOWN keys in the keyboard are better for controlling this, the DOWN key increases the speed, the UP key decreases the speed or stop it (This works also in Word but the keyboard keys cannot be use there).

2- Windows Explorer in Windows XP can have different views like Details, Thumbnails etc. but the Thumbnails view shows you the name of the file and that can take a lot of space if the names are long and you have many pictures you want to view. If you are in any other view and you press Shift while changing to Thumbnail View the picture will display without any file name and more pictures can be displayed in your screen.

Now is your turn.

One that I like...

To add Copy to... and Move to... context menu options

Create the following registry keys

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Copy To
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Move To
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Copy To
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Move To

For the Copy To's set the default value to {C2FBB630-2971-11d1-A18C-00C04FD75D13} and for the Move To's
set the default value to {C2FBB631-2971-11d1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}

Now when you right click on a file or folder, above the send to option are two new options: Copy to Folder
and Move to Folder
You can copy or move files or directories to other folders with this.

That's a really cool one daterminehtor!

To simplify it for users who don't like going through the registry, I just made a Windows Scripting Host script that will add the appropriate keys. It will also copy an uninstall file to the Windows directory and add an entry into the Add/Remove Programs area for easy removal. I'll add this to the Script Repository area of my web site later, but for now here's the file if anyone wants it. (Just unzip and run the install.vbs file.)

Not that it makes any difference, but I think you can do it with two new entries instead of four. I've attached a zip with two reg files to merge if anyone is interested - works on 98se.

Attachment #1, (zip file)

One of my all-time favorites is one I did for my neighbor yesterday who complained her computer was gradually getting slower and slower to boot. I went into 'System Information' from the Start menu>system tools>system configuration utility>startup. She had around 30 things running at startup. I unchecked all but systray, scan registry and AVG. Rebooted and this fixed the problem.

I also like this little jewel I found on annoyances.org for getting rid of the Network Neighborhood icon on my desktop:

Use regedit.exe or copy the below to notepad and save it as Nohood.reg then double
click on it

just make sure you have a enter after dword:00000001
make sure your cursor can go at the start of the next line -- rule of reg files:

REGEDIT4

"NoNetHood"=dword:00000001

Edit: for some reason the reg edit will not copy and paste so here is the link, scroll down to Vernon's post of December 25 12:27pm:

I'm particularly fond of any Windows key shorcuts. Favorite is Windows key + L to lock the system (in XP).

Will post more once I remember them.

I've posted this before, but it's been awhile:

There are many websites and ezines(Lockergnome) with very small hard-to-read type. If you are using Internet Explorer you can click on "View", point to "Text Size" and click on "Largest".

But sometimes that won't work. Makes you want to reach right through your modem and slap a website designer upside the head.

To be able to read small text, have Internet Explorer "ignore font sizes specified by web pages".

Here's how you do it. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools", click on "Internet Options", click "Accessibility", check the box next to "Ignore font sizes on web pages". Click "OK", then click"OK" again.

Of course, some pages will not look right and even jumble or smear their letters when you do this. In that case, go back and uncheck "Ignore font sizes specified on web pages".

One which I like a lot and that I often use is :
Hold down the CONTROL Key while scrolling especially when reading Email and you can enlarge or make the fonts smaller depending which way you move the wheel. Release the CONTROL key when the size is to your liking.

These are two I've used many times to restore normal operation or to shut down Windows when an application froze the cursor or a mouse or mouse driver went weird.

To exit a hung app in Windows NT or later, press CTRL-ALT-DEL, then use the TAB or Arrow keys to select Task Manager. Once there, use the TAB or arrow keys to outline the Application tab label and press ENTER. Use the arrow keys to select the hung application, then use the TAB key to outline End Task. Press ENTER and you're done.

To shutdown Windows without a mouse, Press and hold CTRL, then add ESC to bring up the Start Menu. Even better, the Windows Hot Key will do the same with one keystroke. Then Press U to bring up the Shut Down Windows dialog box and use the Tab and/or arrows keys to select Shutdown. Press ENTER and you're done.

To select all files above or below a selected file in an explorer window, Shift+Home or End. Combine with clicking column headings to sort the window accordingly (in detail view) and it can make certain file management tasks a lot easier.

Winkey+F - couldn't live without it.

One that I like and use frequently, I learned from someone on PC911.

Click on Ctrl + n, and it opens another window, exactly the same one that you have open.

It is especially helpful,if I need to to another website, and look something up. This way, I still have the original site waiting for me to get back to it.

I like setting keyboard shortcuts for commonly used applications. For example, I set CONTROL+ALT+N for Notepad and CONTROL+ALT+C for Windows Calculator. This way if I need to type a quick note or figure something out, I'm a quick 3-key click away from the needed app. (It becomes second nature so much that I find myself doing it on systems that I haven't set up for it. )

To set a keyboard shortcut, find the shortcut for an app in the Start Menu and right-click on it. Choose Properties and then type the desired shortcut key without the Control+Alt (e.g. "N", "C") under Shortcut Key. Finally, hit Ok.

Thankyou Jason,

That is an excellent tip and sure saves time.

I got really annoyed with the amount of time it took me to go through my favourites looking for a link, so I made my own home page. I find it so much quicker to load that and then goto my favourite links.

use regedit.exe or copy the below to notepad and save it as Nohood.reg then double
click on it

jut make sure you have a enter after dword:00000001
make sure you cursor can go at the start of the next line -- rule of reg files

REGEDIT4

"NoNetHood"=dword:00000001

The Above Looks good to me . I only wish someone would give me exact, and I do mean exact, instructions so this dumb guy can kick his network neighbors ass out of town.

Sorry Bob. The exact file shows up when I post and also in the edit page, but the copy of the post will not show the reg file. Weird. Go to Vernon's post and high light the edit from Reg 4 to the last character. Open 'Notepad' and right click on the highlighted file and choose 'copy'. Right click on the blank Notepad and choose 'paste'. Press 'enter' ONE time only after the last character. Under 'file' at the top of Notepad choose 'Save As' and type NoNetHood.reg. Close Notepad and open Windows Explorer and find the file. Double click on it and choose 'install'. Reboot.

Thanks for that tip Jason. My calculator is waaaaay on the right side of the start menu and I am forever needing it.

I used this following tip from my brother.
Right click the tool bar at the bottom of the screen and click on Toolbars. From the dropdown menu, select Quick Launch. Now I drag all the Icons from my Desktop onto the Quick Launch bar. This leaves many programs only one click away and also frees up your desktop.

Create custom toolbars: Create a new folder on your desktop and name it "xxxxx toolbar" (or whatever, the toolbar part is the important thing). Drag and drop whatever files you want to have access to into the folder. Then right click on the toolbar and select New Toolbar. You should see the name of the folder you just created. Check it and have fun!

Good idea Roni,

Here's one I have used for a couple of years.

Right click on the desktop.
select "new" then "shortcut"
In the command line box enter:

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

click on finish, then give it a name.
You can shutdown with two clicks of the mouse, or you can, as I do, drag that shortcut down to the task bar and then shutdown with one click..

Edited as per Sid's instructions
This applies to Windows 98 se. not sure about the other versions of Windows.

Here's one I haven't seen yet.

To create a new folder in Explorer, Alt+F and enter twice.

This has two advantages - some people's "New" context menu item takes a while to open, and it's fun to see if you can beat it by double tapping enter - I never have. Be sure focus is on the folder, and not a file within it - i.e. be sure nothing is selected.

I have seen several posts about creating an extra toolbar, but I haven't seen anybody mentioning the easiest way of creating one
You can drag My Computer icon to the border of the Screen and a new toolbar will be created (The cursor should be as close to the border as you can)
Some other Icons in the desktop can create a new toolbar the same way, like My Network Neighborhood, and My Documents
If you open Windows Explorer you can drag and drop any folder or driver to the border, (the Start or Programs folder for instance)

This works in Windows /XP/2000 as well. Simply click and drag your My Computer icon onto the Task Bar near the right side icons next to the clock. This will create a cascading menu from where you can easily access just about anything on your system.

"Thanks for the tip CTL+N, I'll add it to my list (below).
CTRL+X, C, V, A, Z, P, S, B..."

My Microsft "Natural" pro Intellitype keyboard with built-in wrist rest does all this:
Cut, Copy, Paste, Select all, Undo, Print, Save, Bold, selected text and a whole lot more like: favorites, search, back, forward, stop, refresh, redo, underline, open, print, web/home, mail, mute, volume, play/pause, prev track, next track, media, find, save, all, undo, My Computer, calculator and sleep.

Add to the above all the other well known Windows/Microsoft shortcuts-tricks and this keyboard can do all but the actual typing...;
OK, I have and use AOL "Point and Speak" (~and~ on occassion, Kurzweil's "Voice Pad") so my marvelous keyboard is not even needed most times.

One more, but this is for Outlook Express.

To delete your "sent" folder, open the 'sent' folder, click the Ctrl + A and that will highlight everything in the folder, then just click on delete. That will delete everything in the folder.

It works for the "deleted" folder, also.

In fact, it would probably work for a lot of folders.

Unless I missed it in this long list of shortcuts, you can also remove "My Network Neighborhood" icon from the desktop with Tweak UI. Click on the "Desktop" tab in Tweak UI and uncheck "My Network Places."
You can also just recheck it if you ever want to get it back.

I have been so impressed with what I have learned here at PC911. I’m an old “newbie”, (soon to be 71 years old)...and have been computing for 5 years. I was totally clueless when I began...like, “How do you turn it on?” Since then, I have come lightyears...but I still don’t know if I’m an Intermediate yet. There’s Newbie, Intermediate, and Expert. You
guys here are Expert, for the most part. Maybe you can tell me when I get to be an Intermediate. Is there some kind of test or something? Maybe some kind of Intermediate
Graduation Certificate? I’m just smart enough to know I’m dumb...and that’s not as dumb as it sounds. Many people are dumb and don’t know it cause’ they’re...dumb. I’m just smart enough to know I’m dumb. Am I too dumb to be an Intermediate? But smarter than a "newbie"?

Thanks to all for the great tricks!

One of my favorites:

Make a shortcut of "Send To" and put it in the "Send To" folder. When you need to add a new option to "Send To", create a shortcut and right click on it; choose Send To.

Just thought of more:

As you're browsing the web and find a page you'd like to keep, like these "tricks and secrets", select send page and save it as a draft. Works in Netscape, don't know about IE.

When I create a document to send as an attachment, I save and send it as an .rtf file. Not everyone uses the same word processor or even the same version.

Select "Test Only" for your mp3 files before you record them. If they are corrupt you won't waste a disk. Works in Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. I made a few coasters before figuring that out.

Open a new email and select all the addresses for those emails that always go to the same group of people and save it as a template. I like to use my own address as the To and enter the others as BCC. Don't forget to update the template when someone changes their address.

To check for dead links w/o using a program I select the "Thumbnails" folder view in Windows Explorer while browsing my Favorites folder, just open the Favorites folder or a subfolder within it and Windows Explorer will try to give you a preview of all of your links, if you see a tiny 404 error page then the page may be dead. This is on Win2K

This is a great time saver (tested on Win 98, should work for other versions):

1) Windows Key + r (opens run prompt)
2) Type 'calc', 'sol' (solitaire), 'mplayer2' (media player), 'notepad', 'wab'(address book), write (wordpad)....(or any other executable in the WINDOWS directory--there's plenty!)

I believe this works because the run prompt sets the default directory for C:\WINDOWS. However, I don't know why 'wab' works since it is located in C:\Program Files\Outlook Express. Anybody know?

EDIT: It's the windows key, not the start key. Sorry

Wellllll, since this thread is getting long, one I like to use for these long PC911 threads is to right click in the scroll bar so I can get where I want to more quickly.

Hey Tuff, I pressed alt+Print Screen and got nada.

Edit: Nevermind, gotta use the clipboard don't ya?

Here is a tip I like. Right click on the taskbar and select toolbars and check desktop...now hold the cursor over the vertical line in front of desktop toolbar and hold down and drag to the desktop...next right click and choose view and check large icons. Next uncheck show text.

This works in Win2k, however in 98se I think you need to choose hide desktop icons when you have active desktop enabled.

Executables like wab that are not in the Windows folder can still be launched without typing the full path at the run line if they are registered under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths In fact, you can assign an alias to any exe program so you have something easier to remember when typing out the name. There is an alias builder script in PC911 Tips and Tweaks that will automate the process for you.

Here's one that I found by accident a couple of years ago,

To shrink and expand Windows volume control use Ctrl+S

My taskbar is at the bottom of the screen. I want to add my folder icons to it and clear the desktop.

I can call up the quick launch bar and put them in there but that makes a double wide bar at the bottom...don't want that.

I want only the one bar....can't seem to get that going the way I want it.....

Crockett first put me on to this couple of posts up

Well, Here's the proof of it's never over till it's over. I came back and read the added posts 27 and 29 which held the answers to my question.....

Maybe I'll just hold any further questions until this topic comes to rest, if ever. As far as I'm concerned we could keep it going as it's own side forum......

Some of my favorites...especially on web pages like this one.
In IE while reading the active window press the
Space bar to page down.
Ctrl+Home go to top &
Ctrl+End go to bottom.

Lots of good stuff here! Thanks all!
Try Win Key + U for a surprise! It talks!

Click. Crunch. Join. Feel Good.

In Windows 98 I found that if you screw up your taskbar by clicking on it wrong, you can get it the way you had it before by pulling it down and then pulling it back up. Pull it up and down until it looks right.

I have had to do this for people many times.

Try this if you use IE, go here http://www.bookmarklets.com/tools/search/srchbook.phtml

right click on Search Google, add to favorites, then drag it up to your links toolbar, rename it SG to save space, now you have instant google search box. Highlight any text and click SG and it will feed right into a Google search. Of course javascript must be enabled.

Along the same line, I use a freeware program called Add-A-Button available at http://www.harmonyhollow.net/aab.shtml This program allows creation of personalized toolbar icons of your own choosing. For example, I created icons for PC 911, Google Advanced Search, and Mail that goes directly to OE without the standard dropdown menu. I also created one that links directly to a program that empties temp. internet files and IE history with one click.

Just drag the icon , that you want on the quicklaunch, on the bar. One by one . They will eventually fill the bar and make double arrows at the end. No need for double bar.
