"Whats your favorite App?"

I am always looking to find new and useful application software to try on my system, and I thought it would be interesting to run a bit of a poll here.

I would like to know your favorite applications and why.

My 2 favorites are Infanview and Drive Image 2002.

Both of these programs perform rather useful tasks, and are extremely easy to use.

Honorable mention would go to Wplay pro (mp3 player), MSN Messenger (Version 3.6 Voice chat), Copernic 2001 Pro (search program) and Ulead Gif animator 5.

And I think if I were capable, the program I would create would be a group voice chat program that actually works and isnt full of spyware and pop ups.

I personally don't use the Office Apps that much, but at my wife's non-profit agency, I really like Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition version 7.6. Complex to learn with enormous Help Files (read the manual), but it works well and quickly becomes intuitive to use. I think it's a great piece of necessary software.

As for entertainment, I like Hardwood Solitaire II for wind-down fun. (see post 7)

I'd pick MS Flight Simulator 2002 if it wasn't full of so many bugs. Flight modeling (handling and response characteristics) isn't very good. X-plane is better in that respect.

RenameMan is a pretty useful widget for me. Since I use Opera and can't type I need a spell checker, and MicroSpell works flawlessly for me on any forum. The free version of WordWeb is a nice little addition to your Quick Launch bar.

WordWeb free is basically a dictionary, not a spell checker. MicroSpell can do pretty much anything you want it to as a spell checker, and when I got it he was trying a donation system, with a minimum of $5 I think.

No votes for Nero?

Almost forgot to mention the Fixit program by Ontrack.

Useful stuff, just don't over use it.

The most interesting aspect to this poll so far is just how many of these programs are either free or next to free.

Money doesnt buy happiness when it comes to software, thats for sure.

Great feedback..thank you!!

This might prove slightly contentious but IE6 is my favourite application. It is the application I use most and get the most out of.

If this isnt playing the game properly - I would have to say ACD See plus various plugins. Although I do use Irfanview as well. I also like Jason Levine's Cookie jar and Script Sentry.

ACDSee is a nice viewer, better than iview, but the great thing about iview is it's also an editor. Even though a free version of ACDSee can be had, to get an editor to work with it ( and for me a viewer without an editor is kind of useless) you need Foto Canvas. It ticks me off that even though they have numerous package deals, they don't have an editor/viewer one. Kind of like cable TV packages, they're never going to give you what you need in just one.

Yes I agree ACD See isnt much use without the plugins and their packages are exactly like Cable TV.
However I stumped up for the Power Pack Suite with all the bits and pieces and dont regret it. I quite like the PicaView add on for the right click menu, gives direct access to much of ACDSee without having to open the program.Would never have bought it as a stand alone but really do like it.

LOL, I have only Foto Canvas and the free ACDSee, but I startled myself the other day. I always right click an image and go from there, but for some reason I opened the program and thought "What the heck is this!?" Then I realized of course it was the actual program, which I'd pretty much never seen. Weird how your usage defines your viewpoint.

Things I use daily and often are my favorites .One would be EmptyTemp,I use it many times a day to rid the cookies etc.Another would be AdAware,I hate spyware on my system.Same thing goes for Regcleaner by JVOrg,I try to keep my registry as clean as I can.Of course Zonealarm and AVG are a must to me.I also use StartupCpl to remove items from the Start Menu, either apps that are no longer in use,or those that keep returning in spite of unchecking them in MSConfig. All of these I consider are valuable to me,Tuff

Interesting post, Tuff. Interesting in that there is nothing useful there. Everything is devoted to keeping your PC how you like it - there are no programs that actually DO anything! Not a criticism, just a comment.

Paul, the way I understood the question was, which favorite programs do you use and why.I realize they are mostly programs of the maintenance type, but if you haven't used EmptyTemp you should try it.I believe you would find it very useful ,Tuff

As I said, not a criticism. I've got pretty well all of them myself.

I have a VB script that does (I guess) pretty much what Empty Temp does, but I've been meaning to look at Empty Temp for some time, because you and others speak well of it.

I suppose the rules for this poll were not very clear: probably because there wasnt any.

Well, except for games.. a game isnt an application because games really dont serve any useful purpose other than being able to tune out the spouse and kids for a few hours.

Not my favorite program but an excellent information manager that I never see mentioned.

InfoSelect by Micro Logic http://www.miclog.com/
I use, mainly, the free form data base program for a lot of random information. Search feature is ultra fast. And it has the other features of ordinary PIMs.

Bloated and over priced but I wouldn’t be without it.

Lol, OOOOKKKK, I need to work on my computer terminology, but...I see a few games (apps?) listed in this thread...Mystic Island IS listed in my 'programs' and the agent has to be downloaded before you can chat/play--so what would you call this thing anywho? Oh, and speaking of Hardwood, their version of spades is really good too! Ditto on the AdAware and AVG because of their ease of use.

I have recently come across a really cool application if you are into streaming video over a LAN. It works really slick for streaming video from say, a Linux server through Win2K or other OSes without it being degraded or glitchy even over a 10 Mbs LAN. We set it up and it ran flawlessly streaming DVD digital quality to all the workstations. It works on pretty much every OS and it's free!

I'm impressed with this app!

I'm really enjoying Crazy Browser at the moment. I know it is only like an add-on to IE, but the extra options it offers are great. The inbuilt pop-up stopper is especially good.
