I know the likely response will be "Why would you want to" but, if I add a second hard drive to my PC, could I have 98SE on one hard drive and XP on the other? No doubt I am disclosing how little I understand about operating systems but I plan to add a second hard drive anyway and, while I am keen to try XP, I am somewhat reluctant to ditch 98SE entirely till I know all my hardware and software is compatible. Any comments would be appreciated, thanks. Roger
Yes you can do this it is called dual booting and many of us do this here on PC911. If you have Windows XP on one and 98 on the other, Windows XP should prompt you with a screen at bootup of which one to select, Which ever one you select you boots, It automatically selects the primary one(probably XP) after 30 seconds. http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/dualboot1.html <---this should help you get through the process.
This is exactly how I have mine set up. I got tired of hosing the boot ini every time I reloaded an image file. I never seemed to get it quite right. My MOBO enables me to choose a default hard drive to boot to or I can hit F11 at the BIOS screen for the boot menu. Everything works fine, although I find myself using 98 less and less. Good luck.
You don't have to have a second hard drive (although you can use a second HD) only another partition in which Win 98 or SE in NOT loaded - so a C & D partition on the same drive is OK. It doesn't even have to be empty, just have enough room to load XP & accoutrements.
There is a How To in PC911 on dual booting Win 98 & Win 2000. I printed it out & paralleled it to load Win XP Pro.
#4. "RE: Can you run Win98SE and XP on same PC? THANKS" In response to FZbar (Reply # 3)
To all who replied - thanks for taking the trouble. You have helped me to make the decision to go for XP, on a trial basis at least. After getting caught with ME I am somewhat reluctant to shell out again for a new o/s, but this way what can I lose - except hard earned cash!! As usual, I am amazed at the quick response from this help site - definitely the best thing I know on the net! Roger
