I had major problems with the latest version of kaspersky antivirus running windows 7 with all the lastest windows updates. I removed kaspersky and am now looking for something to replace it - any suggestions would be appreciated - just a standalone antivirus. I am running only malwarebytes antimalware only at the present time.

I'm happy with Windows Defender (and Malwarebytes and Super antispyware).

Have you tried reinstalling Kaspersky?

thanks for the reply. My experience with removing kaspersky after a day long hassle to get everything back to normal has put me off from reinstalling.

Nightly Reader: I had forgotten Eset which I used and liked about 5 years ago. I'll add it to my list.

I notice McAffe and Norton are still advertising heavily. 5-10 years ago they were the pariahs of the day and scorned by experts . Have they improved or are they still buggy, heavy, and slow?

My daughter had McAfee on her laptop and was having fits with it while it was installed. She dropped it off for me to look at and the first thing I did was to remove McAfee. Installed Eset and good to go.

You will probably be fine with just Malwarebytes, but you could use the free Microsoft Security Essentials (the Windows 7 version of Defender). It needs to be downloaded from Microsoft.

A bigger issue that you should be concerned with is that Windows 7 will go out of support on January 20, 2020. You will still be able to use Windows 7 after that date, but keep in mind that with no new security updates from Microsoft, it will become more vulnerable. Also when Microsoft ends support, the big antivirus vendors will also end their support for Windows 7. You should be thinking about possibly upgrading your existing computer to Window 10 if possible, or replacing it with a computer running a more current operating system.

Thanks for the advice. I understand what you said but I need an An operating system that will run Micrsoft Money which was discontinued a number of years ago. I have nothing against Windows 10 but it will not work with the Money financial software because it uses Internet Explorer which is long gone.

At one point there was a registry hack at the Windows Club Website that would fix that but that does not work anymore so I am in a bit of a quandry.

Internet Explorer is not "long gone".

IE11 comes installed in Win 10. Google how to activate it and make it the default browser should that be necessary for your program.

Of course, there may be other conflicts with Win 10 that will still keep your program from working.

Just as with Windows 7, it may be time to think about moving on from Microsoft Money. Are you running the Sunset version or one of the prior versions?
