"adding ram to xp laptop" Sun Jan-07-18 01:32 AM by lenjack
Just updated wife's older xp laptop to W10. Running OK, but a little slow, and I'd like to add some ram. Want to know if you think it will be worthwhile. Specs follow.
Dell Latitude D 630 Windows 10 pro, 32 bit cpu Intel t7250 at 2GHz ram 3G ddr2 HD 500G
Ram consists of 2 sticks. One is 1G pc2-5300. The other stick is 2G pc2-6400. You can see, they are speed mismatched. I'm contemplating ditching the 1G stick, and adding a 2G pc2-6400 stick, to match the other stick. This will give me 4 G pc2-6400. Do you think this will make a significant difference?
No gaming or anything intensive done on this laptop.
I was going to put the drives in older stuff and put an NVMe in my desktop, but ended up doing what I did for now. 5 year warranty. "Better" options if you want a bigger one.
I run a Dell D630 with XP Pro 32 bit. 2 GB DDR2-6400 and a Seagate Barracuda 7200 HD. XP Pro 32 is quite happy with 2 gb Ram. Win 7 and up... no way.
Without a doubt, an SSD would be the Best upgrade. I noticed a considerable gain in performance going from the factory 5,400 RPM drive to a 7,200 RPM drive. An SSD is on a different planet.
The Dell D630 will accept 2 x 4gb DDR2 PC6400 = 8gb. Win 10 will work much better as a 64 Bit OS and 8gb of Ram. . You should be able to upgrade using the same Licence key. At least you could with Windows 7.
Find a couple of sticks of 4gb DDR2 6400 SoDimm on E-Bay or New Egg. Slap in and SSD and your wife will have a very speedy little Laptop at not much cots.
Friends are amazed when I bring my ancient Laptop over and they find how fast it is compared to their newer Notebook... or Ugh Netbook.
BTW, you can gain a LOT of snap to the system by going to Visual properties and turning off EVERY danged Option that says, Fade, Slide or Animate. That justs chews up resources and shared memory.
