EDIT: In your example, most every word contains the correct letters and number of letters to be spelled correctly once they are set in the proper order. Unfortunately, poor spellers, even if they get the first and last letters correctly, don't just transpose the correct letters. Incorrect letters are often added and/or correct letters are omitted.

Jumble newspaper puzzles would still be somewhat difficult even if the first and last letters were printed in their proper positions - though it would make the shorter words easier it solve.
