The batteries on my digital camera need recharging much too often. These are AA. I don't know whether it is the camera, the batteries or the charger. Is there anyway that I can test the capacity of these batteries?

Cheap chargers tend to shorten a batteries life, because they do not have the features needed to properly charge a battery. I have this one, since I needed to charge AAA to D batteries.

Can a good charger rehabilitate failing batteries?

That's what they claim. It works for automotive and motorcycle batteries with the high end chargers that condition the batteries. The second link I sent was for 2700 mAh batteries eight of them in the $24.00 range. The question would be, would your charger do much better with them than what you have. I never had a lot of luck with the rechargeable batteries and chargers commonly available at the box stores.

I honestly would not waste money on premium rechargable batteries, if I were to recharge them in a cheap charger. Premium batteries, premium charger. But the inverse is not a rule of thumb. A premium charger will usually allow a longer battery life using cheaper batteries.
The cheaper chargers instructions usually say to not leave charged batteries in the charger for a reason. The better chargers, like the ones linked to above, can stay in the charger indefinitely after charging, since once they're charged, no more charging takes place. Unless the user resets the unit, and then, since the charger recognizes a full charge, it shuts off the charging circuit.

Daniell, I have used eneloop batteries exclusively for quite a number of years with good success. That Panasonic charger is the latest offered, to my knowledge, and is the one included in Costco package deals of charger and something like ten AA and two AAA cells for $28.00.

Just as a note, the older Sanyo charger, previously included in Costco's pack, has also been a very good charger. Both are what I suppose would be called "smart" chargers. That is, they know when the cells are fully charged and won't harm them by leaving them hanging on the wall for an extended period.

On the other hand, I have several Ryobi One Plus nimh-powered tools and have not been having a lot of luck keeping them from dying on me.

I have done some research of late on nimh cells and was surprised to learn that it is very important NOT to let them run completely empty before recharging and, if planning to store them for an extended period, to do so with half-charges---NOT FULL! This info was gleaned from a very reliable professional source.

I hope Shelley weighs in on this with some further thoughts and opinions.

A "pure" multimeter (volt meter) won't test batteries under load. But, as I think about it, I'm not sure a dedicated battery tester for A cells does, either. In any case, I have long used a Pulse Load Multi-Battery Tester (Mini-MBT) , see ztsinc.com. It will test just about any battery now used in portable devices.

I'm no expert, but wouldn't you be better off with Lithium Ion batteries?
