I'm always amazed by this. It wasn't long ago that scientists thought exoplanets might be rare. Then, we developed the technology to see them but only the extremely large "Super Jupiters." As the technology improved, we were able to detect smaller and smaller planets until we can now see Earth-sized ones. Once they couple this with improvements in detecting a planet's atmosphere composition, we might be able to tell if some planets have life on them.
