Posted by mickster, Thu Jun-27-02 11:02 PM
My dad, MSgt. John O'Brien, Ret., passed away peacefully at noon today. 20 years active duty with the U.S.Army, including Korea and the Viet Nam era.
He was a stubborn Irishman right to the end. He stopped breathing 15 or 20 minutes before his heart stopped. Now I know where that part of me came from.
I'll miss him.

Sorry to hear of your loss. If you have kids, take the time and make a verbal recording of your memories of your dad. Don't leave anything out.
You can even make it a family project. If you have brothers and sisters have them contribute to the recording. Your children and their children will appreciate having a family history spoken by those involved.
Kindest regards,

Thank you to everybody!
My dad and I were like most fathers and sons...we did NOT always see eye to eye on things. That changed as years went by...especially when I started realizing...I'm practically an exact duplicate of him in many ways.
I'm really glad I was able and willing to be there at the end, for him, my mom and my sister...just like he was for us.

You know...I feel really lucky. It's like I have 3 families...my blood family, my recovery family and my online family. What a life!

Thanks again folks.

I'm so very sorry mickster. There is nothing more honorable than the brave men and women who fight for our country. Nothing more honorable than a serviceman with such dedication. Unfortunately, I'm not that brave, I'd do the 4 years and cop out. You can do nothing, but admire the ones that stick with the service just to protect you and me. I never had a father, so you are a lucky man! Again, my condolences.

Thank you all for the condolences and empathy.
My mom and sister saw them all and were thankful also.
My mother pointed out to me, in no uncertain terms that I'd demoted my father four ranks on the original, unedited post. He was a Master Sergeant with the Army Chief of Staff's Office when he retired in '68
