567076, Can't Send Email From App
Posted by daniell, Thu Oct-28-21 10:26 AM
Good Morning

About a week ago the problem began. I could not use Thunderbird to send or receive mail. After numerous calls to my ISP I learned that they updated their server and changed the name. After considerable effort on my part, I was able to receive email but I still cannot send it from that app. Yesterday I again spoke to my ISP. They said that since I can use their website to send and receive email, I am on my own in respect to the app. I really prefer using the app. I tried changing the name in the outgoing server, but it did not help.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Which ISP do you use?

A quick google shows this for Optimum.
Have you used these settings?

IMAP.
Service Provider Optimum Online
Port 993
Outgoing Server mail.optimum.net
Port 465

I can't find immediately what the Security Settings (SSL/TLS etc.) should be nor the Authentication Method (Normal/Encrypted Password).

Thank you for the effort that you made on my behalf.

They told me that it should now be sync-cloud.optimum.net

Ah good, looks like the web info needs updating!

I don't think that the people that I spoke to at Optimum are able to help me.

Oh, I thought you’d got it working now.
What options are you using now?
What error message are you getting?

I was able to get half way. I can receive email but cannot send it. When I try to send email, I get the following.

Sending of the message failed.
An error occurred while sending mail: Outgoing server (SMTP) blank.optimum.net is unknown. The server may be incorrectly configured. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again.

Please note that I left out my full email address for obvious reasons.

The message means that the server name (blank.optimum.net) is incorrect.
You said that they told you that it should be sync-cloud.optimum.net
Did you use that name?

I put in the changed name.

Let me amend what I said. I changed the description but not the server name. I had trouble changing it.

My Thunderbird settings for outgoing server are shown below.
Have you used these settings?
If you are still getting the server is unknown message then sync-cloud.optimum.net can't be correct.
Have you tried mail.optimum.net?
You should also verify the Connection Security setting and the Authentications method setting.

I tried everything and nothing worked. What should I put for the description? Shouldn't the outgoing server name be the same as the incoming one?

The description can be anything you like.
The outgoing server is always different to the incoming server.
What settings did you use?
What error message did you get?

Sending of the message failed.
Failed due to unexpected error 80004005. No description is available.
The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) sync-cloud.optimum.net for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again.

sync-cloud.optimum.net
port 587

I'm not sure what that error code indicates.
Just as a test try setting the port to 465 as in my setting and set the other options as well.
If it still fails what is the error message?
ISPs usually have these settings documented on their website.
Can you log on and see if they are there?
If not then surely they should be able to tell you exactly what the settings should be.

Thanks for your continuing support. I am now going to take a break from this.
What do you suggest I do?

Can I use Thunderbird to access google account?

Try using the settings in that link.
You can certainly use Thunderbird to access Google accounts.

The setting in the link are outdated. They told me that they updated their server and changed the name.
Thanks for the help. I will take a break until tomorrow.

You can let Thunderbird connect to an existing Gmail account as follows:

Go to Tools > Account Settings
On the left click Account Actions > Add Mail Account
Enter the required settings

With the clarity of the morning, I was able to get it working. There was a box that needed user name. After typing it in, it started to work.

Thank you for the effort that you made on my behalf. I would not have had the incentive to do so without it.

In the the past it was easy. Thunderbird would automatically configure everything for me. I wonder why that is no longer the case.

Maybe I did not explain it correctly. In the past, I would just put down my email address and password, and Thunderbird would do the rest.

That is what it will do for the email accounts that it knows about e.g. Gmail.

Have you tried it?
Go to Tools > Account Settings
On the left click Account Actions > Add Mail Account
Enter the required settings
