Silly question, maybe... but have you tried to locate a copy of the earlier firmware and install that in place of the current version?

Not all devices will allow installation of earlier firmware, but there are many that will allow that to be done, precisely for the reason that there may be unforeseen operational issues with the upgrade. Another thing to check is whether or not that printer allows a "rollback" to previous firmware level.
