I have a HP pavilion laptop with windows 8.1. I wish hubby had let me upgrade to 10 but nope. Well it now has bad HD so I put a new SSD I had I to it and installed win 10 home from usb backup I made for my pc. Do I have to buy a new key for it? I think I know the answer unfortunately. Thanks

Maybe he's the "mean streak" the "Kitten" has. Perhaps we've misinterpreted her quote all these years.

When I installed my OEM version of 10 Pro it said the OS was tied to the life of the PC. I have no idea how that might relate to your situation but I believe that is a change in policy.

All you need to do is enter the 8.1 key and it will activate 10. There are many programs that will pull your key from the bios.
You can also run an elevated command prompt and run the following command to retrieve your product key:
wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

Have you looked at Control Panel - System to see if it's activated?

Lol, Ok, it is his pc,,,, all of the other things in the house aremine so I respect his wishes. I did upgrade with my ssd, and yes it is finally registered. Kept telling me to do it and it wasn't done so I finally just clicked on the link, and it did it. First time I have ever run into it in all these yrs of installing, etc. Yes, he is mean. No, I really never get his permission. it is all good.;) ;) ;)
