I want to install an 2.5" SSD into a 3.5" desktop bay. I know I need an adapter to do this. Crucial has a drive that says in the description that it includes a 9.5MM adapter. Would this adapter be what I need for a desktop install or are they talking about something else? Here is a link to drive I am considering.

I installed a Crucial SSD in my desktop with an adapter from Crucial. Unfortunately the SSD wasn’t detected so I assumed it was a faulty adapter. I was sent another adapter which also wasn’t detected.
In the end I gave up on the adapter (got a full refund) and just plugged the SSD directly using the same cables as the HDD used with no problems.
The SSD is so light that I just used duct tape to fix it to the inside of the case, no problems since.

Isn't the adapter just a device that holds it into the 3.5" bay? You plug the cables in just like the old drive you replaced??? Don't you? The adapter wouldn't have anything to do with computer recognizing the drive, would it?

Yeah, that's what I thought until it came. You fit the SSD into it, close the top and it slides into the connecting pins at the front, to which you connect the cables.
It's an SSD bracket (not adapter) that does what you say and what I was expecting. But I needed neither in the end.

Velcro strips work well for SSD mounting as well.

The adaptor is simply a mechanical convenience, and has nothing to do with whether or not the SSD is detected. You could even leave the SSD hanging freely--I wouldn't--and it should still work fine.

As I said, the bracket has no electronics but the adapter has.

Just to clarify, that adapter has no true electronics other that wires/leads/traces to extend the power and data connectors to the physical location they need to be for the 3.5" form factor housing.

There are no resistors, capacitors, inductors or semiconductors in that adapter.

Here's an example of another adapter that has a circuit board that just extends the connections to match up with a standard 3.5" form factor.

I happened to have an adapter that just is basically a piece of metal to mount the SSD too and then I used the existing rails from the old drive to hold SSD in the compartment. It worked out to where I didn't have to buy anything more. It works. The end result is the end with the connectors to SSD are at the top and I just had to plug in the 2 cables. Thanks all for your replies.
