564127, Objective Opinions on All-In-Ones Sought.

Hi, guys and gals!

I'm thinking about replacing my wife's eight-year-old HP desktop with a new HP All-In-One to eliminate the short tower under her desk. Any thoughts/opinions?

Just FYI, the old computer is still working fine (paid under $500 for it at Walmart), but, it's getting long in the tooth (as you can, no doubt, imagine  ). Never had a single problem with the machine in all that time.

A further question: It's a bit troublesome to think that I may be screwed should I get the big idea, or, need, to open the thing up and do some stuff inside, such as upgrade or repair. Will that be out of the question?

BTW, still lovin' my CM Storm QuickFire Stealth keyboard---and lovin' those clickity clack keys --- Cherrys rule!!!

They are not impossible to work on, just a hybrid laptop of sorts, but it's been my experience that there is not enough room for proper cooling and the monitor portion adds heat to the situation. They look nice and are convenient for tight places, just my 2 cents, I'm old school and like a full size desktop.

I find them much harder to work on than a regular tower. My landlady has one and all I hear is the hard drive working it seems to echo in that small enclosure.

John, from what you and Roger say, it does sound as though one can probably do some stuff (upgrades) in these things. That noisy drive, I would imagine, could be swapped out for an SSD. However, I would bet they are relying on on-board graphics, sans graphics adaptor. The latter would make sense in the lower price point models, for sure.

At this juncture, I am going to take a look at building a small form factor box. However, at present, I am totally ignorant in this category. Any experiences to share? All are welcome.

I know a few people that have gone the SFF route but they are on the extreme end of things with 7700k and 1080 graphics cards etc which ups the cost factor probably way over what you want for an email reader/web browser.Cases can sometimes be more expensive for SFFs so you'd have to shop around. But it is doable. Mobo's vary a lot in features mostly because of size constraints so look at that carefully to see which one would suit your needs.

Makes sense, John. Thanx!

Certainly makes sense, Roger. Thanx.

I love All in Ones. All of the computers in the house that are not mine to use daily (3), I've replaced with All-In-Ones.

They look neater, and networking isn't an issue (wireless built in). Mine are fully functional computers, with just one cord coming out of it for power.

They're no different than a laptop is, to work on.

Are they all the same make/model? And, what might that be?
