When I dumped my last inkjet printer about 10 years ago, I purchased an HP LaserJet printer that was on sale for $59.00 Canadian. I also purchased two spare non-OEM printer cartridges from '123 Toner And Ink' for the stately sum of $29.00 per cartridge. I am still on the first of those spare cartridges after all these years. The printer is a P1005 model, and has sensibly performed daily for a decade with zero maintenance. I don't think HP is necessarily the problem, likely just their inkjet printers. From my past experience with Canon and other inkjets, pretty much all of them are a colossal waste of money. I print black and white on the HP laser, and use a local online service from a photo store for beautiful colour prints when necessary. The price is excellent and they are better than anything I was able to print at home.
