I've been using my Dad's laptop this week and for some reason after being idle the logon screen comes up with his user name in which I have to click in order to get back to what I was previously doing. I don't know how this happened as I did not change anything for this to occur. The user account logon screen also appears at start up rather than just going directly to the desk top.

How can I change this from happening. I don't want the extra step on the logon screen and I'm not sure which settings to change. I don't want to have to logon or off period so if I uncheck the welcome screen option in user accounts will this just allow wndows to go directly to the desktop?

EDIT: I believe this started happening after I installed IE7, not sure if it's coincidental or not?

The Windows Screen Saver also has an option for On resume, password protect.

You should also go to the Windows Update website and check for critical updates. It sounds like something may have installed .Net Framework 1.1 which will cause the symptom you describe at startup. The fix is to get the Hotfix update for .Net 1.1.

I haven't actually installed the critical update for .Net framework 1.1 SP1 but it seems to me I recall one earlier? Maybe it had something to do with IE7 as I just installed. I notice it says this .net framework update cannot be removed, so should I get it and would I still need the Hotfix? If so, where do I get the hotfix?

I'm so tired I can't think straight at the moment, lol. I do recall when I originally put this .net framework on my desktop that I got the logon screen and it was easy to change it but I just can't remember how I did it.

EDIT: I do recall (vaguely) seeing a netframework installer on the desktop, I think it was after I installed IE7 and I don't recall downloading this on purpose. Is there something about .net framework and IE7 or Windows Defender as I put the new version of that on too?

EDIT 2: It appears I have the hotfix(KB886906) for .Net framework 1.1 already so that is not what's gonna fix this. I believe Darren had a quick way to fix this but a ways back but I can't find it.

Start - Run

Enter control userpasswords2 and click OK.

Then you can select which user account will be automatically logged on at startup.

That's what I was looking for Ttech :). I see the user ASPNET in there which I'm pretty sure is in there do to .Netframework. Should I delete that Aspnet user altogether?

If you think you won't ever do any programming with .Net, then it is safe to delete that account.

I beleive the framework is needed to run applications written using the framework. So even if you arent developing applications, you still need it to run such applications.

I just wish I knew what program I have on my PC that uses .Net framework. I have a critical update for .Netframework 1.1 sp1, should I be installing that?--Just scares me as it says once installed it can't be removed. And I notice there are other versions of .Net framework out like 2 & 3 and do I need those? It's all a lil confusing to me.

Course this is my Dad's pc and I don't have these issues on mine.

No I noticed that I had downloaded the critical update as it appeared on my desktop but I just wasn't sure how it got there. Anyways he has .Net framework 1.1 on this laptop but I was weary of installing the critical update due to the fact that it says "once installed it can't be removed" and I'm weary cuz I have IE7 and not sure of all it's compatibility issues--maybe that's of no concern?

Another question, are there different .NET Frameworks as I see .NET Framework 2 & 3 and why isn't .NET Framework updated to these, unless they are totally separate? Boy I sound dense, lol. It's been a long tiring week, TGIF, LOL.

The 1.1 update got rid of the log in screen. :D 2 and 3 are different and not new versions of .NET 1. Some programs now use 2 so you should go ahead and install it. 3 is for Vista and you don't need it.

Do you mean that this latest critical update 1.1 "sp 1" fixed it as I have 1.1 and the hotfix already? I"m just not sure why all of a sudden it started to have the logon screen appear in the first place as one day it didn't and the next day it did. Strange to me.

But it doesn't do anything if you've got 2 installed and not running Vista programs as I read it.

Disregard the word 'Vista' in that.

What it is saying, is if you don't download the full distribution package (50 MB +), but use the "setup" installer, then it will only download those particular components that you may not already have.

Wasn't Ttech referring to ASPNET listed in the user account, not the .NET Framework?

My understanding (someone correct me if I'm wrong) is that .NET applications run under the ASPNET account by default to limit the applications' rights. If the ASPNET account doesn't exist, the applications may use the IUSR account and may have more permissions than they would otherwise. These are system accounts though and should not be showing up on the welcome screen or in the default 'User Accounts' console accessed via the Control Panel.

yep, thats right. And when you close that windows, it should ask you to specify which account you'd like to automatically login at startup. It will also ask you to enter the password.

I don't think we ever put in a password. Hmmm, not sure what to do bout that?

I unchecked that box and left the password blank and upon start up I got a box that said log logon restricted, I hit ok and it then brought me back to the user logon area. This really is aggravating :(. I was almost in an "utoh" panic mode, thank goodness I still can get on, lol.

Is it XP Home? If so, you cannot login using the Administrator account except in safe mode. If you are using another account, you should be able to auto-login with a blank password.

I just recreated your error message on a XP Home machine. To fix it:
1. Start > Run > "control userpasswords2"
2. re-check the box for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
3. click Apply
4. uncheck the box again for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
5. click OK
6. enter a username (NOT the administrator account)
7. enter the password, or leave it blank if there isn't one
8. click OK
9. reboot

It should auto login. :clap:

I just did all this & now I log in without a PW but it's the administrator account & from here I can't get to Dave's account, I think I should of highlighted Dave before unchecking. Pretty sure that's what happened. Will check back if I figure it out!!!

Ya that's what I did but I could still get to Dave's account from the admin account,figured that out then highlighted Dave's account,unchecked

I'm glad you got it working Dave. Are you using XP Home or XP Pro? If its XP Home, I'd be willing to bet you didn't log in with the built-in Administrator account, unless it was safe mode.

It's XP pro. But your right though the only time I'd log in as admin was in safe mode. The one time I messed with this was getting rid of the welcome screen then all of a sudden it was replaced by the login which didn't bother me to much it was just pushing the enter key cuz I had no PW under Dave. The only annoying thing was if I powered up & had something else to do when I got back that friggin log in screen would still be there,know what I mean? Anyhow alls well,hope the thread starter gets it done as well!!! :-)
