338605, the future of PC911 Posted by crazyXgerman, Fri Dec-10-04 10:24 PM
howdy, guys and gals!
hope everybody is doing well here. sorry i haven't been able to spend much time here lately. life's been pretty busy. my company merged with another company earlier this year. this resulted in some additional work for me including some traveling. it's been fun but busy. on top of that our house was a mess for the last several weeks due to a lot of home improvement - some new furniture, new flooring (tiles, carpet, baseboards), new DSL line, etc.
hmmmm, that's nice but off-topic. why am i posting this in the computer forum?
i recently received an email from a gentleman in the UK who was interested in my PC911 website. he runs a company selling high-quality computers and is looking for a support site to add to his company to help with supporting his customers as well as non-customers.
long story short, after lenghty emails and phone conversations i believe that he appreciates the site for what it is and will continue to run it in the spirit it was intended with only minor changes, so i decided to sell him the site.
this decision was influenced by the fact that over the last year i've done very little work on the site besides adding the occasional freeware links and the networking troubleshooting guide. i've been focusing more on my job and life in general, and don't really have the desire and drive to continue this responsibility. you've already heard some of this from me a while back when i first started making some changes, so this is nothing really new.
in hindsight, it's cool to look back and see what all has come out of this little site and what an amazing and interesting 5+ years it has been. i've met a ton of interesting people online and made friends all over the world, learned a lot about computers, websites, html, indirectly even got my new job thanks to the site.
since this community here has been a huge part of the PC911 website and my life over the last 6 or 7 years, i wanted to share this with you and let you know what's going on.
i appreciate everybody's support over these years. it means a lot to me, it's been a big motivation. thank you everybody!
don't worry, you won't get rid of me though :) i'll definitely keep sticking my neck in here and add my comments, wanted or not :)
on a sidenote, as part of the agreement i asked that the link to pcq&a as well as the gridteam pc911 page will remain on the site.
best regards and happy holidays!

Wow. Someone actually making money on dot-com. I guess it's the sign of a good product :). The boom certainly didn't last as long as the bust we saw over the last few years. Good for you!

PC911 was my savior several years ago, after the tech at Gateway sent me there for a problem he couldn't solve. I don't think I've called tech support ever since.
Congratulations on the all of the accomplishments that have gone with it, and thanks for doing what you have to keep it on line.

Cool Alex, glad to hear your going to make something from the sale. You did put a lot of time and effort into it and put up with a lot of stress over it. We here are all the better for your efforts though.

Congratulations to you, Alex. PC911 was how I found this forum while trying to fix my former computer, which was infested with spyware and a hijacked home page several years ago. Of course I bookmarked it and began to read PC911 articles and then haunt this forum. I have learned so much. It is a great site and thank you so much for all your helpful articles there. Way to go! -Tootie

Darn, I knew that I should have ordered more of those case badges back then. Kept hoping you might have more of them offered. Good news on your benefiting from these endeavors, Alex. It's been a long way since Winmag Forums. Good luck in the future.

Many thanks, Alex, for all the hard work you put into PC911. It continues to provide great information, and I hope the new proprietor will maintain it in the style to which we have been accustomed. Good luck in all of your next ventures.
With hopes that Jason doesn't get any similar ideas.

Don't worry. I plan on holding onto PCQandA.com for quite awhile. At least for as long as everyone wants to gather here... Probably for a few years longer than that. ;-)

339035, RE: the future of PC911 Posted by JP, Sun Dec-12-04 11:02 PM
Given the short history of the World Wide Web and how changable it is, the PC911 website has lasted a surprisingly long time. This is unusual that someone is able to sell what was essentially a personal website, so congratulations!
I wonder what Shelly has to say about this?
|
339046, RE: the future of PC911 Posted by Sid, Sun Dec-12-04 11:27 PM
Congrats, Alex. And, thanx for all the interesting info. You are certainly not letting any grass grow under your tootsies.
I can't remember how I found PC911 several years ago, but, the instant it first graced my screen I was totally hooked. I made it my home page until switching over to PCQ&A when you closed your doors.
Do you know when the 'new' PC911 site will get rolling? Right now, it says it's 'Under Construction'.
|
339047, RE: the future of PC911 Posted by LilJoe, Sun Dec-12-04 11:29 PM
Sid,pcnineoneone.com is still there.
|
339051, RE: the future of PC911 Posted by Sid, Sun Dec-12-04 11:44 PM
Thanx, LJ. I forgot and just typed in 'pc911.com', which, as I recall from a long time ago, doesn't work. However, now it does open to a construction site called 'PC911'.

Congratulations Alex, you have done well and you deserve it.
Thanks for putting the word in the new owners ear about the UD team in the Basement here. We hope you intend to remain as our captain of course. Imagine a skipperless ship running amuck. Unless the new chap is gong to head us now?
Guess I'll have to dig out the old Union Jack my uncle gave me years ago :-)

Good for you, Alex. You have earned the quality time and the cash that selling your site will bring. Like so many others here, I went from being clueless about computers to being able to do my own upgrades, just because someone told me about PC911. The members here have helped me with many a computer problem. You've provided thousands with a place to get computer help, a sense of belonging to an online community, and a sense of purpose for those of us who joined your cancer-fighting team. You've made your mark on cyber-history. :)

Hi Alex, I can only endorse what others have already said!!! For me, it came as a lifesaver, after many bad experiences with so called Technical Professionals. Since my first visits to PC911, I have NEVER used them again! I now help many geriatric friends keep their computers going, and clean, the bonus is, although I don't get paid, I never have to buy any wine! Good luck in the future, Sincerely, Richard.

By a fortuitous stroke of good timing, Alex provided a new and better home for the hapless refugees left abandoned when the old WinMag forum ceased to exist. Eventually Alex found the PC911 forum management to be a burden, and we became PCQ&A in our new home here. Fittingly, our webmaster here is Jason Levine, who was the Webmaster of the WinMag forum.
We all owe Alex a great debt for keeping this forum alive in its time of need, and teaching us how a forum should be run.

OMG I found you through Winmag and have read every article there. God bless you for giving us such a good site and forum. I would have been still trying to figure out how to work my computer if I hadn't found pcnineoneone. Such an appropriate name. Good luck.

The articles will still be available there. All of us who wrote articles have agreed to allow them to be transferred along with the site to the new owner. The link from PCQ&A will also remain.

Top of page "links."

339723, RE: The site has changed Posted by JP, Thu Dec-16-04 03:05 AM
Also in the sidebar where it's always been, the Help Forum link.
Don't scare me like that. ;)

339753, RE: The site has changed Posted by balo, Thu Dec-16-04 10:38 AM
Shelly the link is there. Click on Links and then Help Forum on left list. Of course it would be better if PCQ and A were listed by name.

I did not see it there when I checked that page yesterday.

Congrats on the sale Alex! I hope it was a bundle!
|
339990, RE: The site has changed Posted by Bob H, Fri Dec-17-04 03:33 PM
I agree. I'm not impressed at all with what has been done and I'd never have found the link to here if you all hadn't posted the way.
|
340764, RE: The site has changed Posted by CompPete, Tue Dec-21-04 04:23 PM
I'm glad the old content is still there, but I dont like the new design at all. In particular, the google ads are WAY overdone and could be very misleading to a newbie. Perhaps it will improve over time.
|
340861, RE: The site has changed Posted by amuk, Wed Dec-22-04 12:31 AM
Well. it's basically an advertising site now with almost all content well enough hidden that a newbie will undoubtedly click on an ad and a "free download". While that's too bad, I cannot but thank Alex for the incredible job he's done over the years. Times and necessities of life change and while I could wish for Alex to keep doing what he's been doing with the site for years, that would be selfish, unreasonable, and just plain nuts on my part. So,thank you and best wishes, Alex.
