223780, PLEASE READ -- Upgrade, Take 2
Posted by jasonlevine, Wed May-21-03 05:07 AM
Well, the first upgrade attempt didn't go as planned, so we've purchased the upgrade services of the forum's author. He'll be upgrading the forums tomorrow around 7:30 - 8PM Eastern. Expect an hour or so of downtime, but, with luck, we'll come back online with a spiffy new PHP/mySQL backend that will not only speed up the site, but allow us to keep more posts active (as opposed to archived).

Nah, tried that already and it didn't work. I did make some pasta with sautéed mushrooms, eggplant, and garlic though. Does that count? ;-)

She is the one that saw the recipe on TV. Then again, I am from the "Emeril School of Gahlic" that says that too much garlic is never enough. You should have smelled the meatballs I made once. A whole bulb of garlic for about 4 pounds of meat! Yum!

Well, David was able to move us over pretty well. Some things aren't 100% completed (for example, no logo up top :o ), but I figured that I'd open the new forums to minimize any posts lost in the transition.

The "Read New" messages option doesn't appear to be working as this post isn't included with the new messages returned. The latest new post - a reply was at Thu May-22-03 03:50 AM under GMT, which is obviously 3+ hours ago.

Is there any way to have all the messages display in "Threaded Mode" without having to click "View" on each thread?

What's the "IP" stand for next to the Alert link at the bottom of messages?

Jim.

EDIT: I just now found this thread in the "Read New" list of messages however it wasn't at the top of the heap where I expected it to be but down in the middle of the list of 24 topics with new messages.

I have the same concern. Navigating the threads is kind of cumbersome now.

Edit: Just saw drmidnight's post below re viewing in linear mode. I agree; much better. :)

This new forum REALLY hurts my eyes... its too damn bright.

Any chance for themes to set colors or ask the admins to dim the bright colors down a notch?

It's nice , except for the text . It is very small and very hard to read . I tried to make it larger but can't ;(

See my post #20. If your page size is set the same as mine, it's the last one on page 2. Anyway, there are directions there to allow you to adjust the font size.

Jim.

Certainly looks different.

Now, recall just prior to the last attempt of the move, it was suggested that one could add a line in a windows file, that would ensure that we would be directed to the new server.

Uh, er, anyone remember what that file is called? And, its location?

Need to remvoe that line now.

That was when the server was moving to a new location/IP. I don't think this upgrade changed any of that, just the underlying source code.

The file was /%systemroot%/hosts or /%systemroot%/system32/hosts.

Posted by daterminehtor, Thu May-22-03 06:39 PM
Here it is...

%system root%\system32\drivers\etc

The file (opened in notepad) is call HOSTS.

Thanks for the tip.

Don't worry. This was just phase one. As you might have noticed, things have begun to change a bit back towards our old look and feel. Now that we're on the new forum script, I'm going to dive into it and see if I can't customize it so it looks nicer.

Thanks for trashing the neon green :) links Jason. Is it possible to put more posts per page within a thread? The new viewing layout options are going to take a bit of getting used to. Onward and upward gang. Sorry about the NJ Devils Beth. :P

Don't even get me started. x( ;(

I was quite entertaining while watching the game last night. I should have covered the Ewok's ears so he doesn't learn the words that Mommy was saying! }( Hopefully the Devils will get their act together and shock everyone tomorrow night in Ottawa.

I have to say I was real skeptical about the new forums at first. But, it really is turning out to be good. My only real complaint left is that a single thread is now being split up between many different pages. Clicking for page 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. is not my idea of fun. I liked the old all on one page idea. Is there a possibility that you can bring that back? Other than that, it really looks good again! Great job!

Go up top and find where it says "View in threaded mode." Click that and it should set it for you.
224364, RE: PLEASE READ -- Upgrade, Take 2
Posted by Doc, Fri May-23-03 02:46 AM
The threaded mode is even worse because all the sub-threads are collapsed. I can learn to live with the linear mode with the multiple pages. I don't think I would learn to live with the threaded mode.

Thanks

- Jeff

* Edit * I am sorry if I am complaining too much. I know things change; and when they do, people have to adjust. I will adjust in time. I appreciate very much everything you do for us Jason and everyone else that makes this site work so well. Thank-you.

- Jeff

Actually, the sub threads only collapse if the thread has reached a predefined limit (which I've set to 50 posts). This thread has exceeded it, of course, but look at one of the shorter threads in threaded mode.
224398, RE: PLEASE READ -- Upgrade, Take 2
Posted by Bob G, Fri May-23-03 04:29 AM
Are you saying that if you set it to say, 500, then there wouldn't be all those little subthread thingies spread uselessly throughout the thread? That the collapsed thread (or whatever it's called) would be right there at the top where a person could make use of it?

I'm finding it a little disconcerting that in linear mode I get an index page indication of the length of the thread (the page numbers) and could make a guess as to where I wanted to go for instance. But in threaded view there's no indication that it's a "view all" thread until you open it, then scroll a little possibly. If you scroll some more you think you've found the thread, but no, it's a subthread. Oh, now I need to scroll back up and find the "view all" link if that's what I want. Seems like a lot of complication for no purpose to me. If I opened a thread even without the index page notice that it was "view all" in length, if there was some long-ass collapsed thread index thing at the top I'd know immediately if I didn't have to wonder if there was another one further down.

To me everything is shaping up great. THe only problem left that I see is that the threads aren't numbered. What are we going to say in a heated argument? "Look at one of my posts above!!" Instead of, "Look at post 35!!"? lol just a thought

Oh and the email notification is pretty vague. It doesn't tell you the topic of the thread that you are being emailed for.

Adlib, I'm not seeing the actual topic number just the reply to number. Maybe it is the way I'm set up. Mine is not threaded. I got lost when it was threaded. It would be nice if I could tell who and what was available in the topic subscription email.

The forum looks great Jason!

Actually there is a post number, but it is useless because it is a forum post number instead of a thread post number. For instance, your post which is number 59 in this thread is numbered 224541.

Shelly - Does that mean it's not possible to have the message number relative to the thread on each message or that it is just not set-up like that?

Posted by Shelly, Fri May-23-03 08:25 PM
Patience. :) Jason is still exploring what changes we can make. We have a number of adjustments we want to make yet.
224565, RE: PLEASE READ -- Upgrade, Take 2
Posted by Bob G, Fri May-23-03 08:01 PM
There's a post number in the thread index if the thread is long enough to have one. More than 5 posts seems to be the trigger. I really miss having it on the post, but I'm not sure how often I actually used it - more of a subliminal reference point. You can always get it from the index if you actually need it though.

I have just noticed that I can't change the size of my fonts in OE x(
First I thought that there is something wrong with my OE but then I remembered the font override in browser's Internet options-Accessibility }( Sure enough , I unchecked Ignore font sizes ...and all's well again with OE . I think I'll stick with a small print for now :(

I don't know what happened , Shelly . I'm just trying it out again , and this time I can change and size the fonts . I can think of one thing I did , I changed size of the fonts (in Avant browser ) from view , while browsing . Medium size is a touch large (boy are we picky :P ) for some websites . Appreciate the help :)

PS x( well , it's some time later and it happened again . I tried my OE and again I could not change the size of fonts . Actually my font size is set to 14 and it reset itself to 12 and wouldn't be moved . I had to uncheck ( Inter. options) the Ignore font size , close the OE , reopen and it works OK . Go figure }(
