221432, Question for Jason Lavine
Posted by agb, Tue May-13-03 08:00 AM
Is there a scripting error in html used in the forum? Specifically I would like to point to topic #58998,where in Muckshifter's posts 2 & 7 some special characters with accent and dipthong have appeared.
If there is no error then can please somebody satisfy my curiosity.
At the point of myself appearing less informed, can somebody tell me about the grammatic rules of using these "funny" :P characters and their applicable meanings in the context that they have been used?
TIA
AGB :D :D

Edit:I had initially posted this question for Steve where in fact it should have been for Jason regret the error.

Thanks Bob.

agb,

I don't see any strange characters in those posts. A screen shot would be helpful. What browser are you using?

I looked at the source code, I don't see any code used in that post.

I don't have the current version of Mozilla, but called up that thread using Mozilla. It looks the same as it does with IE. Wish I knew what was going on...

they were duff.

Am I to assume that QUOTATION MARKS, an APOSTROPHE, and an ELLIPSIS qualify as "strange characters"??? I think they are in pretty standard usage in the English language.

Also, I don't think his name is "Lavine"...

(Broken link fixed.)

Rick,

He is seeing other characters, not what we see. If he can figure out the screen shot, we will see what he is talking about.

(PS: We try to spell correctly, but it's not a requirement when posting in any forum here.)

Is there some reason why all the attachments the poster has made are all named "dcboard.htm" and all lead to the Main Forum "Home" screen?? Is this a faux pas in the forum software?

OK, here I am in Windows with Mozilla. I needed to check the font encoding settings. If you are seeing this problem in more than just that one thread (could just be a glitch in the way your browser is parsing that page), you should check in Preferences under Appearance/Fonts, and see what font language encoding settings you are using.

I use "Western" for English, and I'm not seeing that behaviour in Mucks' post.

Well I'm glad I'm not to blame ... I wouldn't know how to embed special caricatures in a post ... I do have a bad habit of over-using "punctuation" marks ... and 3 full stops instead of a comer.

English is not my first language either ... I'm a Scot. }>

Hmmm..., I think you are on to something there.

<However, excuse me for being a little jaded. So far all the attachments that agd has posted are NOT .jpg files, but are instead .htm files that point to the PCQ&A Home page. Now agd has sent Marty an email again with a bogus .jpg. Something is a little fishy with agd or his computer...>

It seems that agd's browser is handling the "Escape Sequences" incorrectly. If you guys (and gal) look carefully at the quote in question, you will note that the characters identified are all displayed through their Escape Sequences and NOT through their 'usual' ASCII characters.

For example:

If it makes you feel any better … I wasted 10 CD’s by “thinking” they were duff.

...is NOT the same as:

If it makes you feel any better ... I wasted 10 CD's by "thinking" they were duff.

Oh, they look similar, but the coding is different. Grogan correctly points out this may be an 'Encoding' issue. I looked at the page in Western, Baltic, Central European, Western European, Central European (DOS), etc. Many of them display the Escape Sequences correctly -- but not all. Here is an examples:

Central European (DOS): ...any better û I wasted 10 CDís by ôthinkingö they...

So, agd's browser is either working with Escape Sequences incorrectly or the Encoding is set up in a non-standard way.

Add:
<I had to cheat! I could not even find the correct escape sequence that is shown for the ellipsis in Central European (DOS) Encoding. It should be something like "ů" -- which could be a "u" with an º over it -- but as you can see, that does not work!>

<HR>
Corrected the missing "I" typo -- and added the image.
