I looked at this thread because I couldn't imagine what type of question would be illegal. After reading all of the posts here, I must say, it's been very educational. As Johnny Carson used to say, I did not know that! Call me crazy, but I always thought the word "private" meant just that - something secret or only disclosed to the intended party. Now, I realize that if I don't like it, tough. If those are the rules here, then that, as they say, is that. What I think is wrong here is the attempt to justify the practice of invasion of privacy. If someone says something on this forum that is out of line or against policy, then that is public, and your call as to what to do about it. Just because peepers can view whatever goes into cyberspace is not an excuse to do it. Why on earth would you want to look at anyones private message? If they are susspected of doing something illegal, is it not the job of the police/FBI to investigate and request a search warrant? If you think someone is a criminal, then call the cops. Don't be their proxy. Don't get me wrong. I like this place and the people here (well, most of them:) ). My point is this is an awfully slippery slope that should not be accepted just because of a trend of loss of privacy. Would you be willing to sleep in a hotel (private bussiness, open to the public, like you) and have cameras in your room, monitored at the front desk, in the event that you MAY steal? The forum is like the hotel lobby, open to scrutiny without any expectation of privacy. Private messages are like the bedroom and you should stay out! Just my 2 cents.

Alex is the only one I know that can read the private messages, and i'm pretty sure we can trust him.

Apologies then Alex. My mistake. I was just recollecting a debate with an acquaintance who implied possession of complete familiarity with this type of forum setup. I guess they were wrong. :-)

Forgive me, Crunk, but that is not the point. Alex seems to be a person of integrity and I don't doubt that he is trustworthy. The privacy issue is bigger than this forum and I think it's a bad idea to get comfortable with these changes in our society. It's kind of a matter of speak now or forever hold your peace.

what you are missing here is that CG can be legally held liable....

Again, the original post didn't have a valid email...I tried to alert that person of our rules, privatly and my mail was returned......

Now, that is an interesting point. I would like to see the law that says so. I'm not saying that it isn't so, I would just like to read it, or them. Sinse when is it constitutional to hold Alex responsible for the actions of another? If such laws are in place, then they need to be challenged. Christ, we live in a country where individual responsibilty seems to be a thing of the past, and yet Alex can be held liable for someones private message!? How absurd. I know there are laws in place like this. Civil asset forfiture is a good example. Do you know that if a stranger were to smoke dope on your lawn, that YOU could have your property confiscated? You become responsible for the action of another. These types of laws need to be overturned and they won't be until the people say they won't stand for it.
For Alex and the other moderators: I hope that you know this is not about you. You run a great forum and website. We all do and accept things, every day, without even noticing the gradual changes in our way of life. I don't take my rights for granted and I am passionate about what I think are infringements. I hope you understand.

Maybe more like a legal responsibility for the general tenure of actions in a website that he controls. Like allowing minors in a bar without any attempt to screen them out.

You know, I like the idea of being responsible for my own actions and I find it so frustrating when some rule or law preempts that condition

Understood, but we can't throw out probable cause, the presumption of innocence and the 4th Amendment. If someone is suspected of a crime, then these principals should be followed, to the letter. No private citizen should circumvent those protections by acting as police.

The one time only pad is in most cases unbreakable. This is why the military issues code books that sometimes are good for a period of every six hours. The book is good for a month but encryption changes every 6 hours and is never duplicated. Also military code will be in a a 6 character block 34ef4q could mean go to the grocery store at 0700 hours. 6 hours later ty4edf could mean go to the grocery store at 0700 hours. Sill the one time only pad or book is the only way to go if you want to encrypt something. Use the code once and toss it away virtually impossible to break.

I see this forum as being like a group-talk-radio station with no designated official host. When you enter the forum you're on the air...you're told that you can put yourself on hold and make a Private call to another, on one of those neat private, office built-in intercom systems, or an optional cool FM walkie talkie like you'd get at Radio Shack.

While questions of constitutional rights, and responsibility issues are always of interest, while I'm parading around at the park...I don't go into the private/public bathroom and do George Michaels impressions. It's that simple.

i do not tolerate any info about hacking, cracking, piracy and similar activities in the forum, not only because it is wrong, but also because this site and me personally as the responsible person can get into serious trouble.

and just to clarify one thing: some of you are actively exchanging messages via the private message/inbox system here in the forum. do not consider these messages private! i can and do read through inboxes, and know for a fact that such illegal information has been exchanged between forum users.

i don't care what you do on your own computer, i can only point out what's the right thing to do. but i do expect enough respect from visitors that they follow these rules and do not abuse this site and server by exchanging/distributing said info.
